I'm looking into the program, and I was just wondering if anyone had suggestions of what questions would be good to ask. I know the basics about the program and how it works, so I'm looking for more detailed questions, because I have a friend who knows someone who works there so I have the opportunity to really pick his brain. I'll be happy to share the answers when I find them.

i don't know if you already know this, but do people inevitably get cut after the sophomore evaluation? or is it just sort of like a check-in to make sure people are working hard? it seems like kind of tough--but really good--program.

No - UMich does not do any cuts. At the sophomore evaluation the faculty just tell you what you need to work on - no one gets cut.

Another question if you don't mind: Is there any preference given to in state students once an applicant gets to the audition round? Thanks!

Some statistics or trends regarding deferrals, please -- any idea how many (generally) students are deferred from earlier auditions, what sort of odds for later acceptance into the program?

Halflokum: As far as I know at UMich, there is no differentiation made between in state and out of state students. It is all about the audition. In my daughter's class there are two in state students out of 20 and that seems to be about what each class has.

Mommafrog: I do not have any specific statistics, but I do know that being deferred from an early audition is a positive thing. Many accepted students were deferred first. Very few seem to be accepted early and Michigan is very careful to leave openings through their March auditions. The year my daughter auditioned she was in the last group of March auditions that were still being considered for scholarship opportunity and a question was asked that many were concerned that they had already filled their class. We were assured that there were still spots open and my daughter was accepted the next week, others from the deferral group heard after that. I hope this helps, best of luck!!
