Michigan Legacy

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if being a legacy at Michigan (or any other MT program) makes any difference whatsoever in an audition-based major?

My personal view is that you should have it on the application but it will hold less weight in an audition-based program than it would have otherwise. The only weight that I can think would matter would be on the university/academic end of admissions like for other applicants. But I doubt it matters for the audition part of the admissions process (which at some schools is combined with academic/university admissions and at others is separate).

Thanks. I suspect it may help get one invited to audition at least. (My husband is thinking "Hail to the Victors" for her uptempo song!)

Not speaking of audition based admissions but simply regular college admissions, legacy will not get someone in and indeed colleges turn away legacies all the time. For instance, most Ivy League schools turn away about 60% of the legacy applicants. But being a legacy can be a "tip factor" when all else is equal between qualified candidates. You still have to be qualified but legacy status can be an extra "notch" on your file...a positive one. When an applicant is borderline, a legacy can give them an extra boost... a leg up, if you will... over that line. Again, I am just speaking of regular admissions and not the audition based programs themselves.

LOL!!! As a Notre Dame fan, it is hard for me to admit this, but Michigan does have an awesome fight song.

Anne - not trying to be the "bearer of bad news" here, but we know of a very talented young lady with a double legacy (mom and dad attended UMich), who did not make the UMich cut.

I understand that living in Michigan may actually be a better hook, so if you can get your husband to switch residences along with having your D do a rendition of Hail to the Victors, I would fly out to Texas and personally hand you the "extremely hard to ignore" UMich MTapplicant of the year award

That's funny, MTgrlsmom! On a more serious note, by "not making the UMich cut" do you mean she wasn't even permitted to audition or didn't get in after auditioning? All of this is a couple years off anyway since my D is only a sophomore.

Anne - she did audition, but did not get in.

BTW - I think it is fantastic that you are on CC now as it will definitely help you gather tons and tons of information. I remember stepping into this process fairly naive, and I learned so much from reading this forum, that actually "educated" me to the point I could help my D avoid some major pitfalls!

anne, if your child is a strong student, I wouldn't worry unduly about her not making the cut to get an audition. I say that knowing that I worried, unduly, the my D (who is an A student) wouldn't be invited to audition.

I am just handing out advice now that I am "older and wiser."
