Process

I feel too lazy to call the school right now... But does anybody know exactly how this all works... I send in my application, then am notified if I can audition, get my audition date, and go audition... Is that it? or am I wrong? And since being academically qualified doesn't mean you are accepted to the school, are the requirements to be academically eligible lower than the schools average new student? I am pretty sure I have this all right... but ANY info is appreciated

As I recall from my son's application process last fall, yes, that's essentially it (although he auditioned at Unifieds, not on campus). Submit your application, then about 6 weeks later you will be notified to schedule an audition date if you have been academically accepted to the university. As far as I know the academic requirements are the same for all undergraduate admissions, whether they be in the School of Music or elsewhere in the university.

SeniorMom, when you are invited to audition at UMich, I don't believe that is considered an "academic acceptance." You receive no acceptance from the university and could not enroll based on that (unlike some schools that have a bifurcated BFA admissions process whereby academic acceptance to the college is separate from the BFA program). It is simply an academic review or prescreeening at UMich and not the entire review your application will receive if the Music School is considering you once you audition.

Thanks Soozie, you're likely correct - you've got a very thorough understanding of the various schools' processes. My husband and I had a very hands off approach to our son's applications and auditions, so I spoke without being certain. Hopefully he'll see this thread and clarify.

Just so kids reading here understand, when you get invited to audition at UMich, you will not receive an acceptance to the university and so if you don't get into the BFA in MT, you won't be holding an acceptance to UM. You'll simply be holding an "invitation."

Do you know how long it usually takes to get your audition confirmation after they receive all of your documentation?
Also, just curious...if you don't get accepted into the program of your choice can you resubmit your application to be considered for a liberal arts degree or do you have to do that in the beginning of the process and declare it as a second choice?

My application and everything was sent in by the Sept 15th deadline for the Nov 21st audition. They received it all on the 15th and processed my transcripts on the 22nd and I got my audition invitation on October 16th. So it took about a month for me.

Pohsmom,
I believe there is a place on the application where a student can check a box if they also want to be considered as a LA applicant, or Engineering and so on in addition to the MT app. If yo have already sent the app in I would think you could call the admissions department and amend the application. Good luck!!

you have to be given an invitation to audition by submitting your application from what my understanding was. And make sure you are attending the correct Michigan Unified audition because the one in NYC is a different date for musical theatre than the date for unifieds.

I agree with Bird. The "invitation to audition" may be handled differently when setting up Unified auditions, but if you set up the time without the initial clearance from admissions, I'm guessing they could later cancel it if the application has any issues. And I believe Drama may do auditions at NYC Unifieds, but unless it has changed this year, MT has a separate NYC date.
