November Auditions?

Are there any benefits to auditioning on the November date as opposed to the later ones? For example, are there less people auditioning on that date?

There are less people there on that audition date, and you find out your admission decision by the new year, so you don't have to wait so long...

HOWEVER, I felt after last year's auditions that the early audition was heavy on high talent (and they need to keep space open until the end of auditions, just in case - why so many end up 'pending.") Just a feeling, but D did 4 summer MT programs (Stagedoor times 3 and CMU) while in HS and lots of the most talented kids from those were at the early audition. So, like in American Idol auditions, would you go to NY or LA to audition, where it is heavy on talent, or audition in Alabama (no slam to Alabama, here, just using it a an example...) In hind sight, I believe a later audition would have been better for my D. You would have several other auditions under your belt for practice and for not being so nervous, or the option to decide to change you repertoire, etc. based on other auditions. Some school has to be first, however, so do look at those offering early auditions as it can get hard to put them all on a calendar and make it work. You need a master spread sheet and someone willing to help you map it all out, yes, I do not recommend doing the auditon planning/sign ups on your own as it can involves travel, air fares, hotels, rental cars, etc. This is an easy thing to make mistakes on, so you can do it by yourself, but at least have someone looking over your shoulder!! Screwing up a date or a way to sign up for an audition, and they are all different, can be devastating. I saw a boy at Elon last year AT THE AUDITION who got in early academically and thought it meant he got into the MT program as it was his stated major. He did not apply anywhere else. So sad.

We did the November audition because we could fit it in with schedules and visit the school. There aren't many schools with auditions before Jan. Many from that audition were deferred until well after January. The tricky part for a Nov. audition was that everything, including official transcripts, had to be at MI by Sept. 15, or close to it. Check with the dept. to see what the cutoff date is for Nov. auditions. Good luck.

I am aware of three talented people who went to MPulse over the summer, auditioned in November, and were admitted (2 boys & 1 girl). I don't actually know if any "non-MPulsers" were offered admission after the November audition, and so the meaning of this may be skewed, but over the years it sure has felt like not too many people get accepted from that first audition.

When all was said and done, we also had the vague sense that it wouldn't have been a bad thing to do Michigan later rather than earlier. MANY spots were still open later, and we felt it would have been beneficial to be fresh in their minds instead of a memory in a deferred pile.

I agree with perischack and Mom4X. In hindsight, it is probably better to wait.

I agree with everything all of you are saying, and so did my daughter last year at the time. On paper, University of Mich. was a top choice, she waited for that one, did other auditions in Nov., was admitted to the Nov. auditions and got very sick (no voice) and she had to cancel her last audition, University of Mich. Go figure. I say, be really prepared before the first audition and schedule them when you can get them. Best of luck to you!
