Is it feasible for me to take the pre-med path in the general college and to pick up pre-pharmacy as a double major? With all the competition for med school, I'm rather keen on having a Plan B. And:
1) What % of the premeds at UNC are admitted into med school? I tried to google this, but didn't come up with alot of info.
2) Is the UNC or NYU premed program send more kids to med school?
Here are the prerequisites for the UNC Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy. I think you will see a lot of overlap. These are prerequisite courses, not “majors”. You can major in anything as long as you take the prerequisite courses. I have no idea as to whether other schools may have different or additional requirements.
I would suggest you not worry to much as to which school places more people into medical school (I don’t know the answer). Those numbers and percentages are pretty meaningless for any given individual. Whether or not you will ultimately be admitted to medical school will depend primary on your own academic performance and how well you do on the MCAT. The name on your diploma will have very little, if anything, to do with it.
UNC doesn't offer pre-professional majors. I would imagine that most of the coursework is the same for both pre-med and pre-pharmacy. I am looking to do Pharmacy, with the possibility of switching to pre-med, so I am majoring in Biology. Majoring in Biology will enable me to take all of the required courses for both pre-med and pre-pharmacy. You can really major in anything as long as you get the prerequisite coursework completed.
