James M. Johnston Scholarship

My S was awarded this scholarship. We are very proud of him. But other than financial help to cover everything but our EFC, what other "perks" or programs come with this award? I would love to hear from current Johnston scholars to get an idea of what could be in store for him.

Congratulation to your son. At least some of the information you are looking for is here:

The Office of Scholarships & Student Aid at UNC-Chapel Hill

Thanks tyr...Yes, I have seen that and a few other press releases and such. My quest is to find out what is "between the lines". Someone that has experience with this would be especially helpful.

I know what you mean, D is a Carolina Scholar, class of 2011, we had a hard time getting the details online, and in the brochure & literature we received. I would call the office and talk to someone about it. We did, they forwarded our call to another office (sorry I don't remember which one) and they had a current Carolina scholar/honors student to call D and tell her all about programs.
Congrats. I have a friend who was Johnston scholar many years ago. She loved it then and still considers many fellow scholars to be her closest friends.

I have a few friends who are Johnston scholars. I'm *pretty* sure that it's similar to the Carolina Scholarship in the sense that it also offers a bit of a program with it. I know they do a lot of things together, especially at the beginning of the year, and the Johnstons, Pogues, and Carolina Scholars are all given first pick to a Religion seminar that a lot of people here say is the best class offered at Carolina. The professor who teaches it, Peter Kaufman, happens to be leaving, but they're going to keep offering the course and try and keep it up to standard. I'd give the office a call, though, because I don't know much else about the scholarship, except the Johnston scholars are all really cool people.
