According to the collegeboard, UNC's very imortant factors for admissions are pretty much everything.. Recommendation, essay, gpa, sat,ECs..etc
What would be the third important one?(1st gpa 2nd SAT)
But public schools are known for mainly using the grades for the admissions.
You all think that the whole list of things are all that important????
If many factors are important, i don't understand why UNC has such a high gpa statistics..?
Just look at other great public school's data like Michigan. Michigan accepts various types of gpa.

It's because everything IS important. UNC accepts people, not just students. Usually these people happen to be good students.

yeah UNC's app is interesting in that it has 2 essays and a short answer section. you write like 20-word responses to some normal and some really weird questions! they are looking for of course top scores and grades etc, but they want REAL people! people who show a clear passion or personality.

i put gossip girl as one of the short answers...i explained it but it showed that i am a real person. the question was the last book you read outside of class was __________ and why. work really really hard on the essays/short answers!

That's relieving. I was worried about my gpa a lot.. I have a good teat score/Ecs/Essays/Rec but my gpa sucks.. 3.3-3.5 ish

Unlike many other publics, UNC does not use any type of grid based metric; in other words a GPA of X and an SAT of Y is needed before they begin looking any further at an application. Their process truly is holistic but the competition for admission spots is fierce and the overall candidate pool is exceptionally strong, particularly for OOS admissions which can make the process look GPA/SAT focused to those on the outside.

eadad and phonyreal both put it best. UNC looks at everything in your application to make a decision. It's just that a lot of amazing people happen to have good test scores as well. Once you get here, it really hits you every now and then. I had interviews for UNC Fellows this past Saturday, a leadership program you apply to in your freshman year, and all the finalists were incredibly amazing people. I felt honored just to be considered of their caliber.

UNC looks at the whole student, but in the end you really do need the numbers too. I was admitted OOS at UVA w/likely letter, got into Michigan EA, and received honors/scholarship at UCLA, but was deferred and then waitlisted at UNC. Really couldn't have done more EC-wise (participated in internat'l competitions, captain tons of teams, several club officer positions, etc), was first from my hs to ever apply, and graduated top-1% of my class...SAT just a taaddd bit too low (~2100).

I think it's really a crapshoot. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. But don't lose hope on your GPA, I seem to remember a few people on here last year getting in with similar stats. Just really try and make yourself unique. Why should they admit you over someone with a 4.3? That's the question you should answer for them (though outright stating it would be a little arrogant, so don't do that lol). Good luck, UNC is a great school and I'm sure you'd love it!
