does UNC have a maximum number of semesters allowed to complete a degree? i know that some other schools have this and that it includes semesters completed at other schools.

I believe that starting with the class of 2012 (maybe it's 2010 or 2011...don't quote me on this), you have to petition to the dean of your college to stay after 8 semesters.

Its at least 2011 because I know that affects my class.

does this policy include semesters completed at other schools? it took me four years to get my associates degree at community college (yet somehow i was admitted) so maybe I've already reached the limit?

you have 8 semesters at carolina. the purpose of this is to keep students moving through and creating more room for incoming students. You need dean's permission to enter a 9th semester. I'm pretty sure that this is just for full time, so if you're coming down to graduation time and find yourself needing just one or two more classes to graduate that is not going to be a problem because you can be a part time student to finish up those classes. Also these 8 semesters do not include summer school or semesters spent abroad. Because most of us come in as freshmen with credit it shouldn't really be a challenge to finish up your degree unless you have a late major change. This is where the dean's permission comes into play and i think that they would be willing to work with you on it.

Just FYI: I called UNC Admissions and they told me that students taking college classes or earning associates/transfer core degrees/diplomas during high school are not transfer students and that the their credits do NOT deduce the number of semesters you can stay at UNC.

i didn't earn my associates degree during high school but thanks for the info, anyway

i'm going to talk to an advisor tomorrow, i'll let you all know what i find out

That's incorrect, if you transfer in with a two year degree from a community college in North Carolina, you transfer in as a Junior and only have 4 semesters left to graduate.

I don't know anyone who's done that while in high school though...

They base it off the number of credit hours you transfer in, not the actual number of semesters you have spent elsewhere.

So, lets say you've gone part time and transfer in with 60+ credits.. You will be classified as a Junior and given 4 semesters to graduate.

From 49-50 something is Sophomore status, which gives you 5 semesters.

yup. I have four semesters to graduate! I'm freaking out a little bit because I am only used to going to school part time...at a community college no less! But I'll get used to it I'm sure.

Not for high school students. UNC's definition of a transfer student is some one who has completed at least 1 college course after high school graduation.
