Several questions from an incoming freshman

Hello,

I'll be a freshman at UNC in the fall. I am scheduled for CTOPS in early July. I feel as though I'm not prepared as I should be. Ok, here goes -- brace yourself for a stream of questions. What kind of critical information do I need going into CTOPS? What kind of stuff do people usually not think about when going? Can you give me some input on professors for first year classes? I plan on placing out of calculus of a single variable with my SATII (Math Lvl2) and my Calculus AB AP test. I made a 790 on the SATII and I won't be hearing back about my calc scores until late July. My father is going to the orientation; how much time are we going to be together? I think it's pretty important that I do a lot of this stuff on my own. What is the best advice you can give to a freshman from a rural 1A school? I understand that my grades in college will be more difficult to earn. What kind of things can I do to prepare myself over the summer? As of right now, I'm "planning" on studying computer science. Finally, my last question regards my dorm assignment. Does anyone know how Koury is?

Thank you for your time!

You can't completely place out of single variable calc with AP Calc AB. That only gets you out of Math 231, you have to take Math 232, then you take Math 233 (Multivariable Calc). They do a pretty good job of separating students and parents at CTOPS. I hardly saw my dad there, even though he came with me. Koury is probably one of the best freshmen dorms (behind Morrison though). Air conditioned, lots of freshmen, plenty of mingling, et cetera.

It's the prototypical freshman dorm. But air-conditioned, unlike Craige and Ehaus.

So...what about Craige North? Seems really nice, but no one has mentioned it. Also, I got a sophomore as my roommate. Is this commonplace? I thought that she was a transfer at first, but I'm not so sure.

Craige North is a nice dorm. All directional dorms are nicer than their non-directional counterparts. To clarify, Horton is Hinton James North and Koury is Ehringhaus South. I'm not really sure if they actually used to be called these names or these were just code names during construction.

My daughter's roommate was a senior (daughter was a freshman), though in age she was actually a junior. It worked out beautifully. No drama, they were friendly but not connected at the hip, she was mature and full of great advice when asked for it, and able to answer just about any question an oos freshman could come up with. My daughter feels she had the best roommate possible.

Coincidentally, my first college roommate was a senior. Couldn't have been a better match, for many of the same reasons it worked out for my daughter.
