I got a detention

I noticed when I was filling out the application that UNC requires you to provide an explanation if you subject to ANY disciplinary sanctions (including detentions).
I've had one detention my entire high school career thus far, for breaking dress code last Spring. I go to a private school and I accidentally wore the wrong shoes. Do I have to actually explain this as though it were something more serious? The way the application worded what should be considered seemed as though they were looking for something else (like starting a cheating ring or something)...

I would include it as there is a part of the counselor statement that asks your counselor the same exact question, and if he says yes, and you say no, it will come off as you lying, which is not a good thing. To be honest one dress code violation, or being one minute late to class, isn't going to hurt at all, but if you try to conceal the information from them, it could hurt.

Check with your college counselor - if he/she is going to "address" the detention, then you have to be honest and also address it!

Remember - Carolina has a very strict Honor Code and not being "honest" is an easy way for them to deny you!

Example - My D applied and was accepted to Carolina in 2008. She had a 1 suspension from Freshman year for a verbal altercation outside of the school, but since the counselor had to address it, so did she! If you need to address it, be factual, brief, and show remorse and learning! Your event will likely be a "non-event".

See prior post - By the way -my D applied to 8 colleges and was accepted to ALL. Remember, the colleges are looking for serious infractions and bad trends. I'm sure the "new" reporting of these insignificant events are driving AO's crazy!

Yes, and if you do report something, remember to get follow-up documentation which corroborates your story. DS had a "to-do" list item until we got the dean to send an e-mail, which cleared it up off the "to-do" list.

Thanks, CJ Madison, for your story. DS has done 9 applications and only Carolina's said "including in-school suspension", but all the others were not that particular.

"provide an explanation if you subject to ANY disciplinary sanctions (including detentions)."

Whew! And I was worried my son wouldn't have enough "EC's"!

(I think your honesty will look great, OP!)
