Changing designated major on app?

Months ago my son somewhat randomly chose a major for himself when he set up his My UNC page. Last night he wanted to change it to "undecided" before submitting his EA app later today (yes, last minute!) but says it seems fixed on the first page of the app. Does anyone know how to change this? I think I read somewhere that once the application is submitted, you have to call UNC to request the change. Maybe that's also the case now? And, does a designated major on your app have any real bearing on your admissions chances? If not, I'll tell him to not worry about this. Thanks

i had this exact same question because a month ago i put "undecided" on my application but not I want to put "International Studies". I called UNC and they said that once you've submitted your application (with the wrong major on it) you can email or call them and they will change it for you. Basically, the applicant can't fix it-only the administration can and they can change it once they receive your application.

Like LolyGAGHa said, the only way to change ii is by emailing or calling them. However, unless your son selected an extremely popular major or underpopulated major, changing the major to undecided is probably not going to have any effect at all on admissions. Also, if you are worried about him being bound to this major choice, he won't be. So basically my advice is not to worry about it.

TB: chemistry? Strong teacher recommendation coming from his chem teacher and strong but not stellar SAT II chem test score included in his app. So, don't know whether it is good he has listed chem., and I have no clue as to whether at UNC chem falls into the overpopulated major category you mention. The truth is that he is undecided and furthermore his Carolina essays signal that he may lean more toward the humanities and exploring his options. But I agree, all of this at this point is probably nervous over thinking. He still has to figure out before midnight tonight his most treasured possession and favorite random fact. So, I think it's probably time he move onto more important considerations. Agreed?

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. I don't know the specifics of Carolina's major programs, but I don't think moving from Chemistry to undecided would have much of an effect. If it makes him feel better call admission and get them to change it for you, but again I really don't think it will have that much of an effect. Anyway I hope that I was a help and I wish your son the best of luck.
