How is Walsh?

Hello everyone, i just checked the room assignment and I was assigned to Walsh Hall. I know it's very old...are there any other things old or bad about this hall?

Hi! I'm an incoming freshmen (I just found out I'm in McGlinn... anyone know anything about it?) but I stayed in Walsh a couple summers ago with my family (they used to let families stay in dorms in the summer). I thought it was cool and like Hogwarts because it was so old and I used to have fun hiding in the Willow tree in front (I was like 9). My mom didn't like it too much because she thought it was too old. It seems to have a lot of tradition and charm.

Most dorms have their own websites, so google yours for photos, etc. Also, most have their own Facebook pages. People seem to like whichever dorm they get, and there are good/bad things about all. Some love the new dorms for the AC and space, others dislike them for lack of character and tradition, so there is no perfect dorm or quad. It's the people who make it home, so spend time getting to know some of the people you will be living with. Facebook, e-mail, etc., can get you started and will make it exciting when you arrive to finally meet in person. I met several friends in the same dorm thru FB before I arrived freshman year and have become close friends with them, rooming with one next year.

Here's my take on both~Walsh is beautiful. One of the architecturally pretty dorms with a great location right on the "God Quad". It is a top of the mountain location for football weekends. Lots of spirit as evidenced by the "wild women of Walsh" theme. McGlinn is one of the "newer" dorms and shares the same features as it's sister dorm, Welsh Family. My daughter was in "Welsh Fam" and her friend and later, senior year roommate was in McGlinn. The "west Quad" dorms are all air-conditioned and HUGE compared to the older dorms. You will be able to easily fit a futon/couch with side tables and lots of entertaining space in a regular double. The location is good too. The only downside to the west quad dorms is that they don't have as much tradition as some of the older places, but they are coming in to their own. Don't worry, you will LOVE where ever you end up!

Back in my day (mid 80's), incoming freshman could rank their top three dorm choices. Walsh was at the top of the list for pretty much every girl!

I lived in Walsh all 4 years I was at ND and I loved it. I liked the fact that it was so old- it's a beautiful building with a lot of charm and character. I also like that it's a pretty small dorm, so you feel like you know a lot of the people who live there. There is an elevator- it's old and slow, so no one uses it on a regular basis, but it helps a lot with move-in and laundry! There is a lot of 24 hour space also-half the basement (including 2 TV rooms)-which is more than a lot of the dorms have. And the kitchen, laundry, and workout room in the basement are all pretty good. Living on God Quad is great too! You are in between North and South Quad so both dining halls and all the classroom buildings are easily accessible and it's super close to LaFun. God Quad is also probably the prettiest place on campus, but rooms on both sides of the dorm have good views (God Quad/the dome or Bond Quad/the lakes). Walsh also has great bay windows in a lot of the rooms, a lot of single rooms, and some rooms with private bathrooms.

As far as cons, you do get the occasional cockroach (I saw 3 in 4 years, so not a lot, but a bit of a shock since I'd never seen them in MN!) and we even had a bat in the attic once. There is also no AC, but there were maybe 3 nights in 4 years that that was an issue for me. It really doesn't get that hot during the school year, though I would recommend bringing a fan. Rooms are smaller than some others on campus, but with the newer dorms on campus, they are turning a lot of the smaller doubles into singles and quints into quads, so that has relieved a lot of the congestion. Also, if you order Chinese delivery, they will usually get confused and bring it to Welsh Fam, no matter how many times you clarify that it's "Walsh with an A!"

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hey! I'm in the Summer Scholars program and I'm staying in Walsh- actually writing this from my room right now haha. I was a little concerned about the lack of air conditioning at first, but with a bunch of fans it's not a problem at all. Besides, there will only be a few weeks out of the school year that are terribly hot. I'm in a quad and I love it! The dorm is in a great central location on campus which I think is important. Have fun!!
