Last night I got some good scoop on the ND prospies chat session.
1. This year they are expecting about 17 thousand applications (up from 14000 last year)
2. If your high school transcript has all of your official standardized test scores on it, then you don't need to send the scores directly to ND (saves some cash).
3. Deferee's applications are not looked at fully in RD round. Instead, only the notes previously taken about your application from the ED adcom are looked at.
4. Legacies are put in a different pool than non legacy applicants. The legacy pool admit rate is about 40% compared to the overall 24% admit rate. To me, this indicates that legacies are competing against other legacies for a spot at ND and non legacies compete against other non legacies.

All that info was new to me. Hopefully it's helpful for others too.

That's probably true, but it misses an important point - legacies make up about 22% of a Notre Dame Freshman class, which means that a higher admit rate for legacies skews the overall admit rate upward. The actual admit rate for a non-legacy, non-URM applicant last year was closer to 16%, and that percentage will decrease if the number of applications increases to nearly 17,000, as you posted. That's Ivy league territory, for cripes sake.

Can we assume that this football season is NOT having an impact on apps? Personally, I have thought all along that while apps may be up during a great football season, the academics and community of ND is what drives the apps. Plus, I guess there are just more and more people applying to college these days and perhaps discovering the gem that ND truly is. Be proud of the fact that ND is such a sought after University-I know that 17,000 does not offer much comfort to those of you that want to attend but as Radicionist stated, sounds like impressive Ivy league territory to me as well!

Yeah, the stats I posted are not comforting at all. These kind of stats make me feel like I have no chance of being accepted. However, I'll try as hard as I can to get in to this amazing school. My ND admissions rep is coming to visit my high school this Monday. I plan to personally meet her. I think putting a face to an application can give it more life.

Something to think about...they are predicting a HUGE increase in applications, but such increases (as has been mentioned) usually correlate with good football seasons. This means that when they look at EA they are assuming that there will be 17,000 applicants...what if there are only 12,000? I think it makes RD a bit more appealing. If someone at admissions has said apply EA, then do it, but if you are on the fence, think about it...

You make a good point, but I still really doubt there will be less than 14000 applicants this year even with ND's horrible football season. The football season may soften that huge number, but I don't think its going to defer an extra 5000 applicants (even though I hope it does). There are just to many seniors applying to too many schools. It irritates me when someone is applying to ND and ND is like their 10th choice. Once again, people are applying to way too many schools.

I concur. But I guess it just shows you how so many people are beginning to figure out just how great a place ND is.
