St. Michaels's Laundry Service

Does anyone use the laundry service? If so, do they do a good job and is it worth it?

Yes, son has used it for the past two years and has been very happy with it. There are some, however, that think that it is too costly. With his workload, it has been very helpful. You might give it a try for a semester and then decide.

They do a very good job; whether it is worth it or not depends on the individual. NDAL makes a great suggestion, I definately think you should give it a shot for a semester and see how beneficial it is for you.

I think it is around $400 for the year; this year. You can check it at ND's website.

I use it. I love it. But, then again, I've been doing my laundry at home for the past 6 years, and I hate doing it. A lot. I've found the service to be very quick and reliable, although I have noticed that, on rare occasions, they can shrink some things. But I've done that myself too, so I guess I can't be too picky.

Son used it for two years- very realiable and he thought it was worthwhile. I thought it particularly worthwhile, when I read one of the monthly dorm newsletters which mentioned someone left a pen in the washer ruining someone's entire load of laundry.

Laundry service avoids any of these issues.

I just got some information about it today in the mail. Answered all my questions. I think I am going to try it for a semester.

if you do go with st. mike's, don't sign up for the plan where you put $200 up front and debit your service each week from that amount. you can have them charge your student account each week instead and that way you know you won't lose any money at the end of the semester. basically they're ripping people off because you lose any leftover money on your account at the end of each semester if you don't use the service every week.

It says that it's $5 or $6 more per load if you don't start with $200 in your account. It's still worth it to pay by the load?

I think they changed their policies since last year. Ignore what I said earlier

Does that mean if I don't use the service weekly, they'll return the money remained on my account after semester ended?

I still am on the side that argues that it is cheaper to do it in the dorms. I usually had to spend one night every two weeks doing laundry, not a huge sacrifice, and it cost me about $3 to do it. That means over a 15 week semester (we will do 16 though for easy math) I spent about $24. It really didn't take much time, I probably spent 30 minutes putting them in and moving them and then another 30 folding and putting them away, so that is an hour per time. Over a semester, I spent 8 hours. If you look at the $200 and subtract the cost of doing it, it comes down to $176, or about $22 per hour! Do you really want to pay that much doing laundry?

If your parents will pay for it, that is fantastic. There is no way my parents were going to do that! For me, I would rather do my laundry, spend the 8 hours per semester, and have $176 in extra spending money. Yes, I know that everyone is busy at ND, but 8 hours isn't enough to affect your studies. I still graduated magna cum laude and the laundry isn't why I missed out on summa.

dongfang-try calling the Laundry service directly. They should be able to answer all of your questions correctly plus they are very helpful.
