ND Dad: It is definitely worth staying for orientation. Who could miss that huge Mass, the ND band and Charlie Weiss? It's an unbelievable experience, although both times I've done it I was really conscious of the fact that soon I would be getting in my car and leaving my child behind. This time it will be our youngest, so I know I will be a mess.
I hope your daughter loves Notre Dame! What dorm is she in?

i was originally thinking that orientation was going to be dull, but after what I am hearing, it sounds pretty exciting and enjoyable, especially this mass.

Many of the dorms have a session during Frosh-O that covers football cheers, etc. There is also a Football 101 event held by Walsh Hall in the fall. You can also always pick up on the cheers during pep rallies or the games themselves as well.
And orientation will be a wonderful, awkward blur. |

#3's Mom: Thanks! Being a transfer, my daughter knew she was not assured of on-campus housing and would be subject to a lottery. (It appears there is only enough space for about half of the incoming transfers). Fortunately, she learned earlier this week that she had a great lottery number and expects to be notified of her dorm assignment and roommate early next week. She is so grateful to be given the opportunity to get the full "on-campus experience" right away.

ND Dad:
I'm glad to hear your daughter will be living on campus - it will be so much easier for her to meet people and become acclimated to ND.
Let us know which dorm she will be in.

gymmom, are you saying that your child isn't excited? I've found with my kids that the last few weeks before they leave are fraught with tension and emotion, and you get to the point where you just want them to go, because they want to get on with their life!

I think she is getting excited. I just think I am more excited than she is. I know what a great oppotunity this is for her and what a great experience she is going to have.

gymmom, I know what you mean. I've been shopping with my daughters (upcoming freshman and senior) and I keep saying to them "I want to go back to college!" I went to Saint Mary's and they were among the best 4 years of my life - partly because of my proximity to Notre Dame. I'd give anything to do it all again!

Does anyone have a freshman son who is leaving behind a girlfriend who is a senior in high school? The girl is freaking out and so worried that he is going to change. Of course he's going to change, or else it would sure be a waste of time and $50K. He had been looking at things pretty matter-of-factly, but now she is turning him into an emotional basket case one week before we head out. Help!

Monday, I don't have a freshman son but my kid tells me that quite a few students have girlfriends/boyfriends at home or at other schools. As different kinds of social, academic,or other groups are formed, the kids still have a lot of fun together even going to hall dances etc. in groups. His girlfriend is right; he will change and it will be for the better. She will see the new and improved version by Christmas (if not sooner) and Christmas vacation is very long.

I hope most of you were able to attend the orientation this weekend for the Class of 2013. From Fr. Jenkins, Dr. Page, Jack Swarbrick, Charlie Weis, the hall rectors down to the upperclassmen, they all did their best to make the new students and their parents comfortable. Parents may have been sad to leave, but I doubt that any were scared to leave their child with the Notre Dame family. If you could not attend, your child is in good hands.
