I've been hearing a lot of stuff about the culture and social scene at penn. after visiting, I realized that I met an alarming amount of people who came across as utterly pretentious - the type of people who would think others are beneath them because they're not as rich or don't go to as good of a school.
Altogether, this has me really worried. I had really liked the school, especially the huntsman program, but I don't want to go to a school in which students are closed-minded, arrogant, or pompous people who don't accept others, regardless of the prestige or good job prospects.
Is my experience an anomaly? I want to attend a school that has a community fell where people accept one another rather than looking down on others. If Penn isn't that school than regardless of prestige I simple can't see myself attending here.

I would assume that every top school has some pompous people. Only current Penn students can truly attest to this, but it is unlikely they would call their classmates universally arrogant.

My overall experiences here at Penn so far is that everybody is the exact opposite of what you said above. Everybody here is so down to earth and humble about their past.

I didn't know that more than half of my friend circle attended prestigious prep schools until it came up in conversation a month in. I just recently discovered that my hallmate comes from European old money. These people don't brag about their money at all. I have not seen anybody looking down on anybody else because of their socio-economic status.

Apparently that's normal for freshman year. The money starts to matter when pledging to the fraternities that dominate social life. Certain rich frats dont allow others in creating a dichotomy in which the richer students group together.
