Dear WhartonAdvisor,

I got into SAS ED. I plan to take an intro Wharton class sometime next year. If I fall in love with that class, and am not won over by intro chem or intro econ (the two majors I am considering), how hard will it be to transfer to Wharton. I hear that if I get a 3.8+ for my first year while taking intro calc and intro econ, I should be in good shape for the transfer. Is this true?

dual-degree

Hi WhartonAdvisor,
You've posted earlier that at Wharton you could do a dual degree with majors from other colleges with a price of 1. I'm interested in doing a dual degree in east asian area studies in the college, how many more cu do i need to complete the degrees (apart from wharton's 37 cus)?

And i don't fully understand how the tuition fees at wharton work.Do they charge the fee according to the number of units that you do or as an semester fee which you could take many courses as you can?

If so, how would that benefit the students with credits from AP/IB in terms of tuition fee reduction?

I am also an international student, do we have the same opportunities as US residents to work part-time on campus?

Thankyou

Hi WhartonAdvisor,

Will Wharton use a better ACT score over an SAT I score? I got a 34 on the ACT and a 1460 composite on the SAT I. Also, when Wharton asks for "Advanced Credit for one semester of AP Calculus" when you apply, how do you attain that if you are taking Calculus BC your senior year?

Thanks

If you can take Calc BC, and get a 5 on the AP exam, by all means do it. Math 104 is a horrible class.

WhartonAdvisor,

Because of scheduling conflicts, I was unable to accomodate either AP Calculus BC or AP Calculus AB in my schedule. I was at first hesitant to enroll in Calculus Honors, but I did so anyway because I had heard that it was required for consideration as an applicant to Wharton.
Will not enrolling in an AP Calculus course decrease my chances at acceptance?

Thank you!

Venkater - We don't feel that it is appropriate for students from considering an internal transfer before they have matriculated, especially if you have applied ED to another school at Penn. All of the information about internal transfer is available online.

Puccagirl - The number of cu's depends on the particular major, how many AP credits you come in with, and what level of language you place into. Students who do dual degrees with the College meet with a College advisor to go over their requirements and figure out how many cu's will be necessary. A lot of the requirements will overlap though so don't think that it will end up being 70cu's. It's really more in the area of 42-50.

Tuition and fees are semesterly charges, they are not based on cu's (unless it is summer school or you are a 2nd semester senior going part-time). Therefore you can take as many classes as you like (with the permission of your school). If you come in with AP credit that means that you will have less classes to take and can potentially graduate a semester early (or go part-time) both of which will reduce the amount of tuition you ultimately pay. I'm pretty certain that international students can work on campus, just not in federally funded work-study positions.

Reality - We see all scores that you report, but if you have any questions I'd recommend that you speak with your Regional Director. We don't require that applicants have advanced credit for one semester of calculus (not sure where you got that quote from). We expect that you have taken calculus during high school.

Gothic - We expect that students have taken some form of calculus in high school. If your schedule did not permit you to take the most advanced level, this is something that your guidance counselor should mention and that you should communicate to your Regional Director.

Dear Wharton Advisor,

How difficult is it to transfer into Wharton after a year? What are they looking for in a transfer student? Anything different? What kind of GPA do you need or is it dependent on the school?

Wharton Advisor,

I was wondering if you knew when the Early Decision admits have to withdraw all their other applications by?

Wharton Advisor,

I'm currently in IB Economics SL. Should I bother taking AP Macro/Micro Econ? Will a good score get me any advancement credit at all?

Wharton Advisor,

My parents have been pressuring me into looking to transfer to Wharton, so I just wanted to know how that works.

If you get a five in both AP Macro AND Micro, you get a waiver for Econ 010 (i.e. becomes free elective, no credit for AP, but can take any class in place of Econ 010).

foto - Transferring to Wharton from another university is extremely competitive. We look for the same things we look for in freshman applications, only now we also expect that you have done well in college, taken our prerequisite coures, and have college EC's and leadership. There's no magic GPA as everything varies by school. We tend to get most of our transfers from NYU Stern and Michigan, plus a number of other business schools and liberal arts schools. I'd recommend contacting the Transfer Admissions Office.

agent - I'm not sure about this, but my guess would be as soon as possible. You should contact the admissions office to verify.

chaotic - Jose is correct. If you get 5s on both tests you get waived out of ECON 010. If you get a 5 on Micro you get waived from ECON 001 and either just take ECON 002 or ECON 010. If you get a 5 on Macro you get waived from ECON 002 and either just take ECON 001 or ECON 010.

abhim - ECON 010 is "Economics for Business." It is a combined Micro/Macro course only open to Wharton students. It is part of the new Wharton economics curriculum that is required for the Class of 2010 and beyond. Wharton freshmen take this in the fall semester, then take BPUB 250 "Managerial Economics" (intermediate micro) in the spring.

Hi WhartonAdvisor,

I applied RD to the Huntsman program and I'm taking my SAT II language test in January. On the standardized test section of the Penn application, I couldn't indicate any future tests beyond 2006, so do you think that I should email them to tell them that I'm taking the required language test this month?
