Math 116 vs. Math 114

My advisor recommended Math 116 which is Honors Calc II...Anyone have any feedback / advice about the class, and whether it is worth taking over 114? Also, how much more of a workload is 116? Thanks.

A friend took MATH 116 last year and I called him crazy because he's pre-med and he could spend less time on easier A's to boost his GPA. He told me he's paying $40k a year to learn as much as possible, took the course, worked his ass off, and aced it. The worth of any class depends entirely on what you want to get out of college.

Also you can drop down after a couple weeks if you think the harder class is too challenging. Check when the add/drop period ends.

I didn't take 116 (it wasn't offered at the time) but I'd strongly recommend that you check it out if you really like math. Plus, is Harbater the professor? If so, I encourage you to check it out even further. Harbater is a great teacher and a top mathematician.

is there any benefit in doing and getting an A in Honors Calc II over an A in ordinary Cacl II apart from the more indepth knowledge that you would get....as in does being in an honors class make any difference to how the final grade is weighted on ur transcript or how other people will see it?

Honors doesn't really make a difference, especially at this lower level. It probably would help if you wanted to take the 500 level sequence of analysis or algebra sophomore year over the 300 level sequence. Unless you are considering a math major though, I would assume the benefits gained from the honors math courses isn't as great as the time you put in.

Yeah well basically he said that the professors for Math 114 aren't up to par, so in the past most of my advisor's students said that 116 was actually easier because the professor was so much better...Not sure if it would be easier though...

If you are up for the extra challenge, always go with the better professor. Obviously there will be stuff way beyond your grasp, but if you think you can handle the tougher course, go for it. A better professor will communicate the material better and motivate you to work harder. I've found with a bad professor I stop going to class and procrasinate the work. With a great professor I'll wake up for an 8 AM class and start the work as early as possible. My grades usually reflect my effort too.
