Most schools limit their distributions from endowments to 4-6%/year. Even with annual contributions, interest rates are only 3-4% on investments. The Harvards and Yales with mega-endowments (Harvard was over $ 22 Billion in 2004!!) use sophisticated investment strategies and can afford to give a large number of students a free ride.

ivies are stinkin rich xD The whole college deal sounds alot like a monopoly to me ... but then again its not a business (colleges are not-for-profit)...but are they really? just something to think about =P

(Technically, yes they are not-for-profit because all "profit" and revenue go back into the improvement of the school - but sometimes I feel like its just one big business just like everything else in America lol)

4-6%? that's it? what are endowments? don't people donate that money? why can't the school give a higher percentage cause they are getting money back to them anyhow...

schools need money to invest in newer facilities and to advance the school in general. its very hard to balance the budget (i learned from eco class) so give em a break - they're doign their best with what they have.

do u have any idea how much it costs to maintain an institution as diverse and as active a place at URochester? The money coming back is from money they took and invested to grow the endowment, not to give to ppl - or else the endowment would empty out and there'd be nothing for the next incoming class. be reasonable here - the college has to live you know...
