Has anyone who was a finalist and attended the March 27-28 Renaissance Scholarship event heard anything yet?

D got her letter today. She didn't get one of the Renaissance, but she did get a Genesee scholarship--1/2 tuition guaranteed for 4 years.

This may just have pushed Rochester to the top of her list.

I got the Renaissance, I'm definitely going. This was a major factor. Definitely she should go to U of R!

Brazen Raisin - congrats on getting the Renaissance! That is terrific. Just out of curiosity, if you are willing to share, what do you think stood out about you that helped you to win the scholarship?

Thank you Chedva!

D decided today--she's going to attend UR. I'll be mailing in her deposit this week.

I suspect that by the time I am done outfitting her for the Rochester winter there may be no goose left unplucked in all of North America....

I hear you WayoutwestMom!! We live in FL and S likes UR/Eastman, but is still struggling with his decision because of the weather! We are so spoiled.

I'm not quite sure what it was that got me the scholarship, shennie. When we went for the finalist weekend, they read off little introductions about all of us, and mine really did NOT seem impressive next to the other kids that were there. It almost seemed like everyone there had started some charity to feed hungry children, or worked 80 hours a week to help support their family, or came from a country with some turbulent story to tell.

This may seem discouraging, but don't despair, because somehow or other I managed to get it, and I certainly haven't done any of those things. I think it has a lot to do with being relaxed and honest at the interview. I also sent out little thankyou letters to each of my 3 interviewers--really short, just to be polite. Idk if that made a big difference or not, but it couldn't have hurt.

Thanks for the comments Brazen. I am not in the desparing mode. I am a parent and my kids are all done with the process. But I thought your comments might be helpful for others who are selected in the future.

Pom Bomber - congrats on your scholarship as well. Would you feel comfortable adding to the discussion? Was there something on your application that made you stand out, do you think, a reason you got the scholarship?

Hello! - From a Renaissance Scholar

Hey everyone, and thank you! I am so excited to be able to go to the U of R for FREE next year!!! I think a lot of different factors played a certain role in getting me the Renaissance. Like the rest of the amazing Renaissance finalists, I had a very unique application that did stand out from the the other 15,000 or so applications. I did something that probably no one else has ever done (at least to my knowledge), but I did it because I genuinely wanted to (not just to get into an elite school and what not). I think the combination of that, plus really good grades, SAT's, recommendations and essays also won me the Renaissance. As for the interview, I played the same strategy as Brazen Raisin. I was really calm, down to earth, hahaha I was myself! On top of that, the U of R was genuinely one of my 3 first choices, and the fact that I was a finalist for the scholarship made me want to enroll there DESPERATELY!!! =] I made sure to subtly get that message across during my interview, and of course to be polite, I sent my 4 interviewers thank you notes several days after. The admissions committee at Rochester was SOO nice and helpful, I thought it was so cool how they took a genuine interest in me (I am certainly not used to being in the spotlight, as I rarely receive recognition for any of my endeavors at my high school!) It really was a fantastic weekend, and such an honor to be selected, I truly never expected any of this! I sent in my enrollment deposit last week, and I had to decline admission to Tufts, Rice, Wesleyan, Vassar, Middlebury, Brandeis and UConn today. I'm really, really happy with the offer I received and where I am going next year. YAY U of R!!! =]
