Any McNair Scholarship Winners out there from past years?

fsceaglefsceagle Posts: 47Registered User Junior Member
USC will be sending the McNair Finalist notifications in a few weeks and i was wondering if there are any finalists or winners that would like to share their experience. Sounds like a great opportunity for those that are chosen!

What were your stats? Did you receive early notification that you were accepted into the honors program? What was the interview weekend like?

Hope there are some winners out there willing to share!

I'm very interested too, so I hope someone will be able to talk about it. If I am picked as a finalist, the price would be great. I have a question if someone does stop by, I was wondering if you could tell me about the academic rigor of being in the Honors College, assuming you are in it (I would guess, seeing as you have to apply to that in order to apply for the scholarship).

She and I have been PMing.....she's awesome, was hoping to hear from other winners....I'm sure there are several students out there on pins and needles!

Good, she is a wealth of information. I have a Honors College daughter at USC whose freshman roommate was a McNair. Definitely worth being on pins and needles over -- tremendous opportunity for those talented students selected.

Yep, we are anxious and very hopeful! Where is your daughter's roommate from? I keep trying to play the odds in my head that even if half the 250 honors students are OOS, then 40 out of 125 students are chosen finalists, so the odds are about 1 in 3 or less that you get an invite once accepted into the HC, unless I am way off base...........

Either way we are going for a visit during his winter break in Feb......how does your daughter like USC?

there's only 250 honors college students? haha wow i feel cool that i got in. and if that's true i wouldn't say there is a 1/3 chance because it's not random. it's gonna be based on everything and i'm guessing test scores are a big part.....I wish i had better scores lol

    From USC's website:
"Profile: 2009 South Carolina Honors College Class
    Class Size: 321 "
I believe they have increased the class size recently, so I'd say 250 is low. Also, many more are accepted and offered scholarships than attend. So on the conservative side I'd say there are at least 400 admitted to the honors college each year. Could be greater than 500 easily(though I'd guess that may be a little high.) Still, odds are fairly good, just not 1/3.

Okay, I was going by previous posts in previous years and someone threw out the 250 number, and I may have confused Clemson, I know they take 250 per year....all in all though, USC is a great deal with the OOS waiver and additional scholarships besides the McNair, we are excited to go visit during my sons's winter break week of Feb. 20th......

If he attends your S will be mingling with all the Honors kids, not just the 40 McNairs...and he'll be mingling with all the regular student population as well. The new Honors dorm holds near 500 kids..freshman and sophs...theres no shortage of potential friends LOL. My S's best buddies.. and upper class apartment mates wound up being 3 Honors guys he met doing laundry/shooting pool in the basement of the old Honors dorm (Maxcy).I think one of the three was a Carolina Scholar, the instate equiv of the McNair.ALL are native SC'ers and one guy who was born in NJ but grew up in SC.You never know where the friends will come from!
By the way thanks DON HO and fsceagle for the kind words!!! S is now graduated but i try to be helpful

Thanks Cathy! USC sounds like such a nice place, I can't wait to see it in a few weeks, really anxious to see the honors dorm too. Congratulations kgreen on honors!

Thanks I was really excited! The funny part is the acceptance letter came in a small envelope and i thought I was denied haha I'm really hoping I get McNair's though because that's probably the only way I can go to SC.

So you didn't get a big "YES" envelope? From what I have read here, if you get into the honors college you qualify for some sort of scholarship and if you are out of state, then you get instate tuition......

Acceptance letter to South Carolina Honors College (recieved Dec. 23, 2010) did not mention any sort of scholarship or OOS tuition waiver. Not sure if there is some other application that should have been completed to be eligible for McNair or other scholarships. Is the McNair only for SC residents?

Candycane, The honors college application is also the scholarship application. Since you are accepted to the honors college you will be notified the end of January or beginning of February if you were selected as a finalist for the McNair(out of state) or Carolina Scholar(In-State) scholarship. If not, you will be notified around March if you received other scholarships(nearly 100% chance since you were accepted to the honors college). Good luck!
