So I took the AP Calc BC test and received a 5. According to the website, I can get out of taking the placement test. My thinking then is that I would be placed into vector calculus. However, I would like to retake the class next year but I am unsure as to whether I would have to take the placement test since I am not using the credit. Anyone have any suggestions or something?

S took AP AB Calc test, but he also took the USC math placement test in April, because he thought his AP scores would not be back in time for orientation (last week.) From what S said, I understand that the USC placement test only is for placement into Calc I or lower. It will not place you into Calc II, Vector Calc, etc. They use AP scores for that. Again, that is what I understood, but your advisor could help you out on that when you go for registration. Son's advisor wanted him to go ahead and register for Calc II. Have you thought about auditing the class instead of re-taking it? Then you could still use your credits to go into vector calc.

greenville's S is correct.there is no calc on the USC placement test,it's used for placement into math levels below calc and basic calc.S had no high school calc(took Stat instead),took the placement and got placed into calc.He took it last semester, no problem,got an A.
You probably don't need to repeat it,you are probably far ahead of what the basic class teaches with your BC..Call the dept and see what they tell you about placement into advanced calc classes based on your 5 .And by the way,Congrats!!! thats a great score on the BC test.

By the way, how did you get your AP score so soon? My son has not received his in the mail yet, and it says that grades are not available by phone or mail until July 1st. Did yours come in the mail already? Thanks!

I took the test last year (as a junior). Thanks for all the help so far. I was thinking about retaking the class because I will be be going in as pre-med and the class might be a god one to take again, although now I'm thinking about just taking vector calculus (which I took this past year).

are you going in through the Honors College? If so you will have access directly to a pre med advisor.It might be wise to try to email or call that person before your Orientation date to get the proper advice. Look at the Honors College webpage,scroll down the faculty and their advising areas and find the person to contact.

I'm not in Honors but in Capstone. But that sounds like good advice, maybe I can use it.
