I am being interviewed for the trustee scholarship (not NMSF). How many people are selected as finalists for either trustee or presidential and how many scholarships are allocated for each? because i know that some can move up and some can move down. Anyone have stats? Much appreciated. Fight on!
We actually have some pretty good info on this question now!
Many of us have asked USC about this at the Explore events where the candidates are interviewed, and the standard answer is "about half." The answer is usually given in a very vague and non-specific way. That answer did not match up with my observations here on College Confidential, where over the 2008 and 2009 admissions cycles I did not see a single post from a candidate who was NOT awarded a scholarship of some kind after interviewing.
In 2010 and 2011 we did surveys to try to get some clearer info. 2011 showed the following results:
Quote:
Results Summary
A total of 49 reporting results
29 received the scholarship for which they interviewed = 59.2%
11 were bumped up Presidential --> Trustee = 22.4%
9 were bumped down = 18.4%
Of those bumped down,
1 Trustee -> Presidential
1 Trustee -> Dean's (1/4 Tuition)
3 Trustee -> Director's ($4,000)
3 Presidential -> Dean's
1 Presidential -> Director's
No students who interviewed reported that they did not receive at least a Director's scholarship.
In all, 81.6% of those who interviewed were awarded at least the scholarship for which they interviewed or were bumped up.

Some cautions with this information:
-college confidential posters are often VERY qualified and may not represent the "average" candidate
-people are more inclined to post good news than bad

When you look at the freshman profile linked in the previous post, you will see that 489 students matriculated with a Trustee or Presidential scholarship. Last year USC announced in a article that they had invited approximately 1000 candidates to interview for scholarships. Those numbers match with USC's vague "about half" answer in terms of how many students actually accept the scholarship, but that does not mean the others came away empty-handed - It means that USC's yield with scholarship awardees is about 50%
The Stamps family donated 10 full tuition scholarships this year. These scholarships also include a $5,000 stipend. So 10 more full tuition scholarships should be added to the total.
Parents, the Stamps and Mork Scholarships are worth around $200,000, assuming a future rise in tuition. I am grateful to the USC alumni who provide promising students these wonderful opportunities.
yes, these figures appear to include the NMF Presidential scholarships according to my reading of the data
However, I agree with alamemom and think the difference between the 1000 interviewed and 489 trustee and presidential scholars is the yield. Remember, many of these kids are getting multiple offers and HYPS acceptances to decide amongst.
I remember all the excitement we felt when we opened that package that arrived last year! We weren't CCers, so had no idea of what to expect and figured the package was just more college propaganda! We were so grateful to get extremely helpful info on CC--principally info that was provided (and continues to be provided!) by alamemom, Georgia Girl and Madbean! Had we lurked earlier, we would have been anticipating the good news! Ha! We were actually going to toss out the package before opening it!!! For those who will receive packages in the mail this week, be sure to follow the posts, asks questions and be ready for what lies ahead--- you'll get ALL your answers from the posters I mentioned (and others, of course!) Congratulations to you all!!! Thanks again, alamemom, Georgia Girl and Madbean for all that you continue to do for us!!! My D is a happy Trustee in Trojanville!! Fight on!!
This brings back such great memories. I remember finding the link online from CC last year and finding out my daughter was a trustee nominee. She ended up getting the trustee but ultimately decided to take a full ride scholarship at U of Miami, funded by the Stamps family (small world). For those of you who get Stamps, you are in for a real treat. What a wonderful family and foundation. Congrats to all the scholarship nominees!
Thanks DotingDad! Well it's always wonderful to share the good news with such cool parents and students. I'm glad I can be of a little help around here. It's nice to pay forward the kindness of nikara and cc411 and Georgia Girl who were posting great advice 4 years ago when I first found cc.
DotingDad, glad to hear your D is a happy Trojan Trustee! And dumbo11, thanks for checking back in with us over here on the USC forum at scholarship time. Your D's story is awesome (2 terrific scholarships!) and U Miami is great.
Everyone gets very focused on the moment of announcements here, but those who have been through this process (or watched our kids go through it) know it is only the beginning. Many (most) of these students will get many more wonderful opportunities and admissions. The roller coaster is only picking up steam.
Congrats everyone during this exciting time! Like others, I had no idea what that packet in the mail was when I was accepted to USC with a trustee interview. We found CC relatively soon after getting the packet. I'll lurk around to answer questions as an experienced trustee recipient and student interviewer. Congrats again everyone!
Thanks, DotingDad! And GREAT to see dumbo11 again! I am so glad to hear about the great opportunity at U of Miami!
And VERY nice to see Nikara - the majority of what I am able to pass on here I learned from Nikara and cc411 back in the 2007-2008 admission cycle for Fall 2008. Nikara's FAQ for admissions thread helped us greatly back then and has stood the test of time and continues to be a great resource for new applicants!
Hello Nikara! Like you, we had no idea that there was the possibility of early acceptance and with that the scholarships. Believe me, I started paying attention to the SC board after that (4 years ago tomorrow!)
