AP/IB classes: Full IB, --- HL Math, HL English, HL Psych, HL Visual Art, SL French, SL Environmental

    Subjective:

Essays: My CommonApp one was okay, but I think I shone on the USC Supplements, I really worked the Undecided card and made it positive and specific to USC.
Teacher Recs: Fairly good I think, wasn't allowed to read them at my school :(
Counselor Rec: I'm on really good terms with him, so hopefully good!
EC highlights: Varsity Swim Team Captain, Varsity Water Polo, National Honor Society President, French Honor Society VP, a bunch others, and I wrote/published a children's book and really milked that haha

    Ethnicity: White
    Gender: Female

Other Factors, hook?: I interviewed with someone from admissions and I think it went pretty well, though I feel like I seemed a bit ditzy! Also I really think my book helped me get in, I'm very lucky

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC...?: Awarded Dean's 1/4 tuition scholarship, but not a finalist for any of the big guys. I was so shocked to get in!! I cried when open the packet, I had no idea it was going to be my letter I thought it was just more pamphlets! So SO SO grateful

This is for the kids with the low scores! We all have a chance to be Trojans!

    Decision: Accepted

    Date applied: November 26

    Date decision postmarked/received: Received 3/27

Accepted at which school/major at USC: Annenberg, Public Relations

    Stats:

    SAT Total: 1760 (superscore) M: 500, CR: 590, WR: 620
    ACT: 29
SAT Subject Tests: US History 760, Math 2 570, World History 600
    GPA-UW/W: 3.8/4.21
    Rank: 29/570
    AP/IB classes: Full IB diploma

    Subjective:

Essays: Probably the strongest part of my application, because as you can see, my scores and grades are not the best. I wrote about the thrift store being the place where I was most at peace for my common app essay, and my supplements showed how passionate I was about PR and USC's Annenberg.

Teacher Recs: 2 teacher recs, both I didn't read, but they were teachers that really enjoyed me, I hope. One of them was my journalism adviser, which probably helped me get into Annenberg.

Counselor Rec: My counselor is an angel, and we are very close. Her husband also works at USC.

EC highlights: award winning newspaper editor-in-chief, literary magazine editor-in-chief, co-founder and president of tutoring program that uses Skype to teach foreign students English, elected as co-public relations student government, co-public relations of link crew, in a signed band woth my sister, 2 sports freshman year

    Location/Person: SoCal

    State or Country: California
School Type: large competitive IB school with over 80 diploma candidates. About 2500 students.
    Ethnicity: African-American
    Gender: Female

Other Factors, hook: I interviewed with them and handed them my portfolio. Maybe because I'm in a signed band with my twin sister, also. I can't really think of what made me stand out, if at all.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC...?: USC has been the dream for a long time, and I was so shocked, happily shocked of course. I cried for two hours, especially because both my twin and I got in, which we were afraid would not happen (she has a higher GPA and rank than me an I have a higher test score), but we are so grateful they took us both! I got into some great schools (UCSB, UC Berkeley, and Boston University) but USC is defnitely a dream come true. I hope I get some financial aid, I am planning to attend in the fall.

I thought I had no chance, because UCLA rejected me and UCSD waitlisted me, but always have faith in yourself!

    Decision: Accepted

    Date applied: December 1st
Date decision postmarked/received: Postmarked March 26th, received March 28th.

Accepted at which school/major at USC: Viterbi, Industrial and Systems Engineering

    Objective:
    •SAT I (breakdown): x
    •ACT: 33 (36E, 30M, 31R, 34S)
    •SAT II: x
    •Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.99UW
•Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 8 (unweighted)
•AP (place score in parenthesis): U.S. History (5), Biology (4), World History (5), Chemistry (4), Language and Composition (3).
•IB (place score in parenthesis): x
•Senior Year Course Load: French 5, Concert Choir. Also all AP: Literature, Psychology, Calculus BC, Physics B, Physics C (Mechanics), U.S. Government, and Macroeconomics.
•Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar with Distinction? Otherwise none.

    Subjective:
    •Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
-Theatre; 14 shows through senior year (several leads, student director) [9th - 12th]
-Choir; member of both top ensembles, one co-curricular the other extracurricular. Also sing in church choir once a week. [top choirs 11th - 12th]
    -NHS (Officer) [11th - 12th]
    -Student Council (Secretary) [10th - 12th]
    -Speech team [11th - 12th]

•Job/Work Experience: Part-time job at ice cream shop about 6 hours a week during school year. [10th - 12th]
    •Volunteer/Community service:
-Regular volunteer at Animal Humane Society (3 hours a week) [10th - 12th]
    -50+ NHS volunteer hours
•Summer Activities: Chosen from top students in my school to participate in an exchange trip to Japan [summer after 11th]. Otherwise just work and theatre.

    •Essays:
-Common App: 6-10/10? Really not sure if it's good or not. Too personal to be comfortable letting anyone read. From my own judgement I'd say it's fairly well written and compelling.
-Supplement: 9 or 10/10. Not going to lie, I was very proud of my supplemental essays. Put a lot of thought and time into them (and I think it payed off!).

    •Teacher Recommendation:
    [Didn't read either]
-Chem teacher: 10/10 (said it was one of the best he's ever written)
-English teacher: probably 8/10-ish (she says she writes very good recs)

•Counselor Rec: probably 7/10, don't have a personal relationship. Probably all positive but generic.
    •Additional Rec: x
    •Interview: x

    Other
    •State (if domestic applicant): Minnesota
    •Country (if international applicant): x
•School Type: I don't know how to judge competitiveness. I'd say a fairly average public high school. Not particularly affluent nor impoverished. Rated in the top 15 of MN high schools if that means anything? Offers an above average amount of AP courses.
    •Ethnicity: White
    •Gender: Male
•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

    Reflection
•Strengths: Dedication to ECs, leadership positions, GPA, course rigor.
•Weaknesses: ACT math score, lack of subject tests, AP scores(?), not enough volunteering(?), white male, no major awards or lab/intern work.
•Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my numbers were good enough to be considered for admission and my extracurriculars and particularly my essays pushed me over the edge. I knew USC was a good fit for me and did my best to show that in my supplement.
•Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: U of M--Twin Cities (College of Science and Engineering). Rejected: Northwestern (McCormick), Stanford.
    Waiting: Nowhere else, thank God.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC...?: It's been a long and sometimes agonizing wait, and I'm relieved that I can finally say it's been worth it. Over the last several months USC has become my top choice, and I am so honored to be granted admission. My 30 on ACT math and lack of subject tests had me worried, but I'm thankful USC was able to look past small weaknesses and truly look at me holistically. My fingers are crossed that financial aid works out and I'll be able to call myself a Trojan this fall! Fight on!
