Since this is such a subjective topic, most here (thankfully) tend to leave this alone. You can do an advanced search and try to find old info but I think it will also be too subjective for you to get anything out of it.

You may get comments like, "That house is known for having coke addicts," or "That house has the prettiest/ugliest girls," etc. Or even some try to rank them. Some give opinions based on a very small sample of girls from a sorority or even just one experience with one girl at one event. It is very easy to stereotype but obviously can be very wrong. Even if you do get some information about reputations, it can change drastically from year to year.

If you are asking because you are thinking of going through recruitment, you have to see it for yourself. I recommend that you don't listen to any one else's opinion about this.

    <----sorry, wet blanket here.

I'm in a fraternity at SC, and while I think it would be great if there were no ingrained reputations, they do exist among students. Ignoring them would be burying your head in the sand. It's best to be educated about them and quite honestly, you will find out anyway talking to other girls. I have had at least one event with all of the sororities, most of them more than one. Take all this with a grain of salt though, as reputations change pretty quickly. It's best to keep your mind open, when you rush. If I am slammed for writing this, oh well, it's all info that you will find out pretty quickly anyway.

Groupings, as of Spring Semester '08.

DG-Long-standing top house, very good rep. Anchor splash is a huge hit.
Theta-Good rep, good-looking girls, haven't heard anything negative about them.
Pi Phi-A sorority on the rise, benefited from a (perceived) hot pledge class.
Kappa-Kappa-Reputation (deserved or undeserved) for being snobby. Formerly up at the very top, still up-there though. Funny incident last year regarding an e-mail sent out. I would rather not post it here, but you might hear about it.

    Alpha Phi
    Tri-Delt

    Gamma Phi
    ADPi

AChiO-Used to be an architecture frat.

*Alpha Gamma Gamma is a new sorority, so no-one knows much about them.
** This is only for Greek sororities.

    Thank you for the responses!!

I applied as a transfer student for the fall of '08 and just wanted some insight on what to expect if I did decide to rush. All of my friends go to UCLA and are in frats and sororities and they are loving it, so I thought I would give it a try at USC ( if or when I get in!).

Go in with an open mind. Knowing reputations is a bad way to make a decision. You should choose/rush based on who you actually like no matter what.

    minor corrections to sfgiants' post:

~Alpha Chi Omega (Alpha Chi/AChiO) was never an architecture frat...where did you hear that from? :)

~Alpha Gamma Gamma was a locally established Jewish sorority until it affiliated with Sigma Delta Tau (Sig Delt), a historically Jewish Panhellenic sorority, in 2007.

...And wow, the Kappa e-mail ended up in an article? I remember getting forwarded that e-mail last year, but I didn't know that their President wrote an apology letter. But whatever, old news.

    to cc411:

"If you are asking because you are thinking of going through recruitment, you have to see it for yourself."

~Haha, you really DO have to see it for yourself. It's quite an entertaining show.

    Re: AChiO

I was at their house, talking to one of the girls, and she said "This used to be an architecture frat." I remember thinking at the time that this was strange. I now realize that she was probably referring to the actual building, and not the sorority. Sorry, and thank you for the correction!

Thanks also for the correction about Sig Delt.

W/regard to the Kappa e-mail, I actually re-thought my decision to post the link, and wanted to remove it. Unfortunately, the 30-minute editing time frame passed. I PM'd a moderator but I guess he hasn't gotten to it yet.

And yes, keeping an open mind is essential, best not to be swayed heavily by reputations. The majority of Greeks are happy where they are at.

I don't have first hand knowledge of the entertainment, but I've heard about it. A girl I know in a sorority said that during recruitment practice, she was sore from practicing the head bobbing in the doorway. You'll see.

I`m planning on rushing ... is there a lot of hazing?!
  • margaritasalt17margaritasalt17 Posts: 393Registered User Member
There is no hazing whatsoever! :)
  • cc411cc411 Posts: 1,724Registered User Senior Member
Ha Ha- I guess that wasn't clear. During recruitment, the girls stand with their heads in the doorway and sing. They have to practice quite a bit to get their timing right because they pop their heads into the doorway with great precision. Ahh- still can't explain. You just have to see it.

It has nothing to do with hazing.
