Yeah, I think English teacher is a requirement. I'm going to ask my English teacher from last year, because the new one has only known me for a few months or so. I'm a little bit torn between three teachers for my other recommendation though, since each have their pros and cons.

If I actually get in (eh...*doubt*) and my high school won't issue an honorary diploma, so be it. It won't matter much if I get my college degree anyways. The acceptance rate is about 10% for RHP, isn't it? So it's super risky...How are your grades and ECs, dopaminescene?

They're good, but could be better. I'm fourth in my class.
I dance and have been dancing indian classical for 11 years. I play field hockey. I am an active member of 6 clubs. I volunteer. I am a student leader. and I have taken a bunch of courses over my summers in my field of interest. so i don't think it's impossible, I just want to try it.
how are yours ? prolly better.

Oh, very nice. ^_^
Grade-wise, not so hot. In terms of unweighted GPA, I have a 3.8, but the margin between ranks is pretty slim. Ah, I guess I was a little more chill than I should've been. I'm also an active member of about 6 clubs, and am an officer in about 4 of them. Freshman year I was class president. I've interned at an overseas law office and I am an attorney at the teen court program in my community. I'm an AP art student this year, and I've won awards at the state level. I've played violin for about 6 years, have won some un-noteworthy regional awards, and play in a self-founded quartet and a separate wedding band. Other than that I also have some business-related awards on the state level.
Anyways, I'm writing my application this week...and it's making me giddy. O_O

hey all you rhp hopefuls
more than anything, the director of rhp is looking for engaging, bright, and mature students who are particularly talented in a certain area more than students who have incredible grades and scores but are boring and "do everything."

i had a 4.0 uw and a 33 on the ACT, but i got into rhp because i was an intense ballet student, went to ballet programs around the country, and and directed a dance company whilst in high school.

Would being a committed dancer, and having a passion for neuroscience and taking many science courses delving into it be considered talented in a certain area?
I do many different things because I like to be busy, but I dance and learn neuroscience because I really want to.

Thanks, socks.
Well, I guess it's too late to do personality plastic surgery, so I'm gonna have to make do with what I have. x_X The thing is, I do "everything", but I don't necessarily sacrifice depth for quantity. (Actually, that depends on who you're asking, but for the sake of my self-esteem...Let's pretend.) Everything I do...is connected by an interest in law and a passion for entrepreneurship (therefore, my plan is to practice international corporate law). For example, I do play violin and draw, but besides the miscellaneous (and probably negligible) awards, I support myself as a wedding band musician and from sales I make off of t-shirts I design myself. To see if I would actually enjoy studying law, I'm involved in teen court and interned at a law office in China last summer. Socks, I know I am not extremely "sharp" in one area (say, directing a dance company and going to ballet programs around the country), even if most of the things I do revolve around a central theme. I have a passion for fast thinking and business. I don't know if that's evident from what I've said so far, or if it just seems like I'm some sort of messed up jigsaw puzzle. :P

I understand where you're coming from, rosinyangster.
I'm the same way. I genuinely enjoy doing all sorts of different clubs and activities because i LOVE to think. it makes me feel like whatever I'm doing is important and potentially world-changing. I want to be a neuroscientist, and everything I do is somehow related to that goal, and if it isn't, it's because I genuinely enjoy it. I am a paid blogger for a site related to promoting the fact that the majority of the teens in my state don't smoke. I participate in the school musicals. I help make robots. I help out my local tv station. I LOVE to do these things even though my ultimate goal is to become a notable scientific researcher and professor.

Exaaactly. You described my feeling perfectly. There are so many things that I want to do that I haven't gotten around to doing yet. I haven't got the time, the independence, or the resources. Going to USC next year would kind of...rip that chain of youth from my ankle.

That part of the process doesn't really apply to me.
I WANT to rip that chain of youth, and transplant it at USC.
I want to be part of the same things I love at high school, but maybe specialize a little more.

This may sound reallllllly dumb, but I didn't really grasp the high-level of the USC film department until now. I started helping my local tv station with film and editing this year through my dance performances, and i absolutely love it, but i have no idea how to blend that with my goals =P

definite room for growth there though =)

haha. this is random, but do you want to pm me your screenname or email or something so that we can talk more conveniently? i like cc sometimes, but other times it's just annoying =P

[i had a diff account for prep school admissions. waitlisted twice =) blessing in disguise.]

Oh sorry, I read what I wrote again, and I guess I didn't convey it well. I meant that I, too, WANT to rip off that chain of youth because right NOW, I have no time, no independence, and no resources. So we're actually in completely agreement. (:

And sure, I'll PM you my email or screen name. Let's keep this thread going though, because maybe some other RHP people will join the discussion too. It can't just be the two of us. Would be nice, but alas...

it isn't. i saw a post from the summer from some guy/girl who was trying to be chanced for rhp.

honestly, chances threads are just people's opinions. i think that unless you go there, like socks, or you are an admissions counselor/head of rhp, CHANCES ARE -- you don't know anything about who that school admits lol.

plus, i feel like rhp applications are really candidate based.
if a kid is completely bored in high school, then duhhhh--rhp is a good idea. but not unless that kid has some idea of goals or structure. just being bored doesn't cut it.
& truly admission at this rate does NOT reallllly matter unless you're counting on rhp.
i mean, worst case scenario, you have your senior year back?! sounds good to me either way.

Yup, either way, I'm good.
In reality, I care about it a lot, but I'm trying not to put too much hope into RHP, because the higher you lift yourself, the further away the ground is...when you fall. People have said I'm cynical, but I think it's realistic.
On a side note, I had a question about SAT, so I called the RHP people. They weren't there, so I left my number. Well, of course they would call me back when I was taking a nap. I'm pretty sure I sounded groggy...if not drunk. O_O So much for first impressions...

hahah
it's okay. i called them, and i sounded completely stupid.
i was like "hi, um, i'm calling because i'm applying to rhp. is there, like, anything, like i need to do before sending in the application?"
=P
it was funny. but it's alright, i don't think they judge you until they get your app =)

Gahhh. How far are you on applications? I noticed that they ask for an (optional) picture. Well I stuck one on there, seeing as it's not pimple-season yet. And it can't hurt that much, since my last name already tells them I'm Asian.

And yeahhh, I didn't know if there was some preliminary thing I had to do before sending in the application. And about Part I and Part II...like, since Part II is the same part as the second part of the undergraduate application, how do I know my applications won't be stuck in two different piles? :\ I'm skeptical, and paranoid, because stuff like that tends to happen to me. Also, if my SAT score reaches them before my application does...how weird would that be, seeing as they would have no record of me yet? The doubt in me is starting to ooze out, slowly but surely...

Speaking of SAT, you know how CollegeBoard lets you send free score reports to four schools? Well I'm a junior, so I haven't started applications yet. Would those schools actually keep my score report and expect to see my name on an application some time in the future? If that's the case, I'd hate to be the one ordering their filing cabinets...

Would getting recommendations from two English teachers suggest that I'm not well-rounded? Probably. I feel a bit lightheaded right now, so maybe I'm just rambling. Whooo.
