Is California's economy really that bad?

I am deciding whether or not to attend the M.Ed. School Counseling program this fall. I would have to take out loans to pay for my degree.
Is it worth it?

Is the LAUSD hiring personnel? Could I get a job as a teacher?

How bad is California's economy? Will it recover in a few years?

Just to say how bad it was... my brother with a bachelor's in political science, couldn't get a job at Wal Mart.

Check the LAUSD web site for job listings. Also, check the Sunday LA Times and see what kind of job listings you see. Are you fluent in Spanish? It really helps to know Spanish in S. California. I suggest you try to get a job with LA City schools or with a major employer and try to get your employer to pay for your degree. Are you sure you want to take out loans with the shaky economy?

My sister-in-law got a pink slip from LAUSD. She's been teaching for 3 years now.

CA is a huge economy...if it were a country, it would be the 9th largest in the world (by GDP)

As the world goes, CA will go as well, and the recession will end sooner or later. Things may be very different a year from now. You have to think long-term plans, as well.

The CA state government is in shambles, though. LAUSD is hurting because it was a troubled district in the first place, and now can't count on the state for very much support.
