How strong is the USC applicant pool?

Ik know that USC admits excellent students with excellent applications, but I was just wondering... do ALL students who apply have excellent applications or does USC just pick out the good ones?
Are there a lot of people with relatively low stats/bad resumes who just apply to USC because they think "I might as well give it a shot"?

I just want to know who I'm competing against.

A little of both. I've heard of one friend of my daughter who applied that had no chance, she was eventually rejected. I've also heard of kids with really good stats but were also rejected. But how is it different from other colleges?
