Students, faculty and friends of the university have long provided tutoring, scholarships, mentoring, neighborhood improvements and and other projects to the areas close to campus. The Miami Herald reported USC was No. 1 (tied with Penn) on a list of higher education institutions that are most engaged with the local communities.
