My son is a sophomore at UT and couldn't be happier. We are from the Northeast. He is an honors student in the Sykes business school majoring in Entrepreneuship. Please feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks MomsWorried. I have been reading some mixed reviews about the faculty, academic quality, on-campus housing and the meal programs so any feedback you can provide on those would be helpful.

I would also be interested in knowing what you and your son think of the honors program there? My son is interested in their business program and what kinds of internships are available in the area.

The faculty for the major schools (business, nursing etc.) is very good. My son found that some professors for the core and elective courses a bit weak. This may be true for many schools. My daughter attends an academically challenging university and has found that same scenerio. UT has very reputable business school with the Sykes School of Business. Internships are available mostly during junior and senior year although my son was offered a banking internship his freshman year but declined. The honors program has some perks and my son feels his honors courses have the best professors.
I am not sure what mixed reviews you have read, but the on-campus housing is beautiful. New dorms have been built with spacious rooms...mostly suites with shared bathrooms that are cleaned weekly. There are many dining choices and my son likes the food especially the fresh fruit and vegetables that available all winter. (Florida!!!) Hope this answers your questions. I am currently a freshman at the University of Tampa and I am already looking to transfer. I choose this school for both nursing and marine biology. I am from CT and looked forward to the warm weather. I regret my decision to come to UT. I have found that the students at this school do not take anything seriously. The school contains students mostly from the northeast. The only thing to do on the weekends is go to ybor city and drink. Other than that there are house parties. Weekdays consist of the same thing. Students rarely go to class. The pool is much too distracting. Students are either too hung over to go to class or would rather tan in the sun. The weekend before finals was the same amount of partying. The week of finals students were still tanning at the pool and the small library is empty as always. The students here are very trashy and are unconcerned with school work. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not go to this school. I absolutely hated it. If you have any specific questions.. feel free to ask!

Sorry to hear you're unhappy at UT. You need to find a school that is right for you. You have made some general conclusions about the students at UT. While I am sure that there are students who would rather party and tan than go to class, not all students are like that. My son does go to class, plays on the golf team, has exceptional grades and has a group of friends (not all from the northeast) who are honor students. While there are trashy students at every school, my son and the students we know from the Northeast and CT are the complete opposite of trashy. I hope you find a school where you'll be happy. I am aware that not all students at the university are trashy and party animals. It is unfortunate, however, that MOST of the students are like that. I know college is a place for drinking and partying, but not to this extent. Partying is the main concern for students at UT. I am curious, do you happen to know the transfer rate of this school? The normal (aka not party obsessed students) leave. The transfer rate is well over 50%. Those who stay will most likely not graduate in four years, or will not graduate at all.
Like any other college, certain students will find UT enjoyable and worth the money. If you are looking for a school with all play and no work, UT is just for you! If you want to be serious about your future, look elsewhere.

I am currently interested in transferring to University of Tampa, and I think it's important to note that at EVERY university there are kids that just party all the time. It's usually the kids that have felt sheltered all their lives, and college is their first chance to go crazy. It seems like a lot of students from out-of-state go to UT, which is understandable because of the great location, weather, and things to do. Some of these kids finally feel "free" from their parents away in another state, and I guess they go a little crazy. Maybe these kids are also from cold states in the northeast and don't have summer year-round like in Tampa, so the pool, beach, and other outdoor activities are new and much more appealing and hard to resist.

It's important to note that UT's amazing location gives the students lots of opportunities to do things outside of school. It's in downtown Tampa and the city is so absolutely fun. At the end of the day, it comes down to the individual. When your kids are graduated and going on job interviews, they are there by themselves, not sitting next to the party animals who went overboard in college. It comes down to the individual's work ethic and drive. If your kid wants to be in the honors program, wants to graduate with good grades, wants to get a good job.. then they will. At my current university I have a 3.8GPA, and still manage to go out and have fun once and a while. And yes, go to the pool sometimes.

If the library is empty, good. There's more space for you to study. Also, realize there's only 5,000 people at this school. I go to SDSU and there are 30,000 students.. an empty library would be amazing.

I am a currently a freshman at UT who is working on transfering to another school. I came to Tampa from Texas with a open mind and looking for something different. Within two weeks of being here I realised that this school is not for me. I feel like there is only really one type of person that goes here- a person looking to party. I have no problem with partying myself, but I feel that we are coming to school with a purpose, and that purpose is to get a degree to be sucessful. The majority of students here come from the north to enjoy a year-round spring break. There is a certain kind of person that will love and thrive at this school, but that person isn't me. I know many, many people that are transfering or have left after the first semester because they weren't happy with UT.
Another thing that I would like to point out about UT is that there is very little to do on campus(unless you want to drink). The school claims it has over 200 clubs, but my guess is that, excluding greek life, less than 20 are active. Student Productions does have some awesome events though.
As for the library, I had a lot of trouble doing a research paper with the material they have available there. It is not a well stocked library at all and the wireless internet doesn't work well in there. But, you can always find a spot and the staff is very helpful.
