Does anyone know much about the Longhorn Lots located east of IH-35? Are the lots fenced and gated? Is it safe for students to leave a car there?

They are not fenced or gated. Cars parked there are more likely to be broken into than cars parked on campus, but leaving nothing visible inside your car will minimize the chance of break-in. Spring break: Prime time for break-ins | KXAN.com

Just...don't bring a car to UT. It costs more, and the buses are free for students in the entire city of Austin and on-campus. I think you even have to take a bus to get to some of the student parking?? Also, Austin is great but it is a big city and has more crime and break-ins.

i brought my car. i paid like $160 for a C+ permit, which allows you to park in the longhorn lots anytime and in the garages after 5pm. i wasn't aware the longhorn lots are on the complete opposite side of the campus where absolutely none of my classes are. i've parked there i think twice. it took me like 20 minutes to walk to my classes in 100+ degree heat. needless to say, i was unhappy. i have some classes during/after 5pm, but not many. so i still end up paying $6-$18 a day to park in the garages and i don't live near campus, so the bus doesn't even come by my place on a regular basis, and they completely stops their route there in the evenings. a garage permit is over $700 and in limited supply. i am starting to think it might be worth it.

^anexia-Aren't you qualified for the S permit? That is a permit for the commuting students and the rate is $602 annual, $287 Srping or Fall. It is still expensive but is a little better than the garage parking rate for the university residence hall students(R permit).

yeah, i might look into it later. it says they're waitlisted right now except for manor garage, which is right next to the longhorn lots :\ thanks for reminding me, though!

What would current students suggest for someone like me? I want to bring my car down with me, but I won't be driving that much. I'll just be using it to drive home every now and then and run some errands. I plan on walking and using public transport very often. I'm looking at the C+ parking pass. Would I be allowed to just leave my car some place overnight for long periods of time?

In the C lots closest to campus, your car cannot be there between 4-6 in the morning. I would not recommend leaving your car for extended periods of time in the East-35 Longhorn Lots. There is no security or fencing and your car would eventually be a target. I would suggest living off-campus in a residence that has parking if you wish to leave your car somewhere.

Some Longhorn Lots have no parking between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m but 24/7 lots are also available for the extended time.

Parking East of IH-35 | Parking & Transportation Services (PTS) | The University of Texas at Austin

C or C+ permit is an economic parking option for students who don't need a car on the daily basis. From campus, one can hike, ride a bike (there are bike racks by the Longhorn lots) or catch a free shuttle (East Campus shuttle) to the east side of IH35 parking lots.

i don't think you can park overnight in garages. i might be wrong. but i know you must have your car removed the night before a big game.

You can park overnight in garages only if you purchase the exorbitantly expensive R pass (assuming you'll be on campus). Failing that, I guess you could buy the C or C+ pass and leave your car over on the other side of I-35, although, with the volume of car break-ins/thefts in the campus area, it doesn't seem like that great of an idea. It's your decision, though.

If you live in Dallas or Houston (or San Antonio, I think? they started that this year if I'm not mistaken), there are buses that regularly run to these cities directly from campus if you don't feel like feeding the UT-Parking-and-Transportation-Services-industrial-complex. If you're from the middle of nowhere like me, you might just have to dish out the money for the garage permit.

I'll probably have to get a garage pass. Siiigh. I live like an hour north of Dallas and I don't want to have to deal with buses and getting rides home and the like. I also want a car at hold just in case I ever need to leave for a family emergency or something. Thanks for the info. I don't want to have to worry about my car being broken into.

they also have shared cars you pay for access to. they include insurance and perhaps gas. Is mileage included? | Zipcar
