Advice on dorms?

I am attending UT Austin next year, and am in the process of applying for housing. does anybody have ANY advice on the dorms at UT? apparently most freshmen get stuck at jester (which i hear are nasty), but i like san jacinto. if i dont get a good public dorm, i will probably end up staying in the castillian private dorm. PLEASEEE give any advice you can think of to help me chose the right place to reside at for the next year =)

Do a search on dorms, there was an incredibly long and really good thread running last year ALL about all the dorms. It was very informative and should answer alot of your questions.

Don't do the Castillian, I've heard not very positive experiences from there. I am in San Jac right now and love it and definitely recommend on-campus housing your freshmen year, especially San Jac or Duren and if you don't get those, then Prather, Moore-Hill or Breckenridge are good too I hear. If you're looking for private on-campus dorms, I'd probably say choose Dobie or Scottish Rite (if you're a girl).

I'm living in Jester East right now, and honestly it's not that bad. For some reason Jester gets a bad rep, but it is really shaping up as a dorm. They have been doing construction, so it will be even better next year (the nice floors, I think it's 2-6 in J East) have nice hardwood floors and granite countertops already, and I believe they are fixing more up over the summer.
The dorm is located close to the stadium, and a short walk from the tower- it only sucks if most your classes are over by Burdine, but even then the 40 Acres bus stops right in front of Jester. There are also 2 dining halls IN the dorm (plus one for athletes).

Similar to Jester would be Moore-Hill, Prather (not recommended), and San Jac, all have great locations. I have heard Prather has rather small rooms and isn't very nice.

On the other side of campus you have Littlefield, Kinsolving, SRD, etc... Littlefield does not have a great rep, the rooms are small and it is a very old building. There are also stories of the ghost of General Littlefield's Wife "living" there - if you believe in that. Kinsolving has the benefit of having a good, cheaper dining hall right there, and is close to the drag. These are all girl dorms, however. I think there are some all-guy dorms there as well but not sure

Actually Prather has larger rooms because the dressers/shelves are recessed into the wall. Plus our security is terrible at night, and you can get people in past guest hours incredibly easily.
