Last year, I applied by paper Regular Decision. I received my acceptance letter in a slightly bigger than normal envelope. It was not in a big package.

I started on, completed, and submitted my application on the day I believed to be the deadline (jan 3, although they moved it up to jan 24 the next day.) At the end of february, I received a "likely letter," informing me that the admissions committee had been impressed by my application, that they thought I would fit in well at UVA, and that they hoped I would visit and consider attending UVA in april. It didn't explicitly say that I'd been accepted, but it was fairly obvious. Then, on March 15, I checked my emails and found the following message:

"On behalf of the Committee on Admission, it is my great pleasure to offer you
admission to the University of Virginia and to invite you to join the Echols
Scholars Program. We will host a special open house program for admitted Echols
Scholars on Monday, April 4th and hope that you will be able to attend.

Please visit the web page below to learn more about Echols Day on the Lawn:

We look forward to welcoming you on the 4th.

Sincerely,

John A. Blackburn
Dean of Admission
University of Virgina"

For the rest of the applicant pool, I believe decisions were online on march 31 or april 1, and letters were mailed around the same time. My acceptance package was a slightly-larger-than-normal envelope (although not one of the full-sized ones that other schools use.) I lingered on the decision of where to go until april 30 and finally decided to mail my deposit down to Charlottesville.

The don't have rolling decision. They're just normally quick with ED applicants.

does it matter to adcoms for uva, when the applicant sends his stuff in for ED? Will someone who sent their app in like 1st of Oct, have a better chance than someone who sent in their app like 30 Oct??

As long as you get your app in by the due date, you'll be fine. I turned in three applications late to schools that are more competitive than UVA and I still got into them. My Georgetown app, in fact, was mailed in 10 days after the deadline (oops!). I didn't do my UVA app until the day I thought it was due (jan 3rd) and completed it while watching the NCAA football national championship game. I found out the next day that they had extended the deadline until jan 24...
