Hereford?

I got assigned to the Hereford dorms this year, which was not my first (or second, or third) choice. From what I gather, these are fairly new dorms with air conditioning. On the other hand, they are further from the center of things (which could be good or bad depending on outlook, i suppose) and the way it is presented on the website makes it seem very....umm....."nursing home-ish".

I'm a little put off by this whole idea of group activities and special dormitory clubs, complete with a "principal" and all. It just makes this place sound kind of sheltered. Am i wrong to think this? I'm very flexible and I don't mean to jump to conclusions, but I just wanted to know if any current UVA students had any opinion of the Hereford lifestyle. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I also read that 80% of the rooms are singles and that a little over 100 first-year students live there. Does this speak to the amount of social interaction that occurs in this residential area, as opposed to others? i really hope I don't come off as a whiner here...I'm just curious. For all I know, it could turn out to be a fantastic experience. Thanks for any help guys!

i walked into the lounge at orientation and was, like, "wow, a medieval prison." we now call it hereford prison. most of the other 1st yrs put there are obviously upset as well. at least during orientation i was lucky enough to have a roommate or i would have been more miserable. the walk was ridiculous and the buildings were just ugly... and it was soooooo cold. wow im glad im in brown but i feel your pain. go join the facebook groups lol. theres one "i got here*****ed as a first year" from last year rotf!!

The only thing good about Hereford is Runk dining hall. It's less likely to be overrun with 99% of the first year class like O-Hill and they have good ice cream

. Hereford is pretty isolated since it on a hill and hidden by a forest, but that doesn't prevent some people from going out and stuff. Three of my pledge brothers were in Hereford their first years and they were pretty cool, but my ex-love interest was a recluse while living in Hereford (and is living there next year as well!). People always make the best of things with living situations like Hereford. Heck, I'm living in Faulkner and that is MUCH farther than Hereford, but I ain't complaining! All the non-Greek parties happen in Faulkner!

Yes, but not in the same numbers as you'd see in old dorms.

1. Old dorms
2. New dorms
3. Hereford
4. Brown (i was one of the two rushees)

so would you say it's going to be miserable being in hereford? or can it work out fine if you make the effort?

If you make the effort and get the hell out of there most of the time it won't matter- since then you'll only be there to sleep.

Hereford....... Runk is nice and the food is much better than O-hill/Newcomb but I would only go to Hereford under one condition....and that's even tentative at times.

I lived in Hereford my first year, and let me just say that yes it is insanely far away from everything (but you get used to it). Since it is a residential college instead of first year dorms, it's a little more difficult to meet people. Basically my first year, I hung out with and got really close to a group of about 10 people who were all also first years stuck in Hereford. We chose the most absurd day of the week to get wasted and called it Hereford Wednesdays (which became pretty well known in new and old dorms). Thursday the weekend begins with a big bar night (or house party of sorts), Fri and Sat hit the frats etc, Sun somebody somewhere is having something crazy going on, Mon ... come on its Monday you have to party, Tues recuperate. So, point being that living in Hereford in no way dampened my partying.
