pre-med at UVA

I love UVA and I'm thinking about going into pre-med. Can somebody please tell me about the pre-med program at UVA and what courses are required? I can't find detailed info on the UVA website!

There is no pre-med program at UVA, nor do I think it exists at most universities. If you mean guaranteed med, UVA doesn't have that either (though VCU does).

The courses you take are dictated by the medical schools you want to apply to and the MCATs, not by UVA.

"Pre-med" isn't a program or a major. Students looking to apply to medical school need only take two semesters each of biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics and calculus, and sometimes additional classes like biochemistry and english. On top of this, a healthy amount of volunteer work and/or research is needed.

In general, any top school school is fine for completing "pre-med" requirements. If you're interested in being a doctor you should pick a school that you'd enjoy going to and that has a strong overall academic reputation.

Most schools did away with pre-med majors/programs years ago. You'll see pre-med advising at almost every school these days.

A student here started an online newsletter for those who consider themselves pre-med.

Fun fact: Of the seniors who applied to med school last year, 77% were admitted!

Another point, LizzieE: the medical school acceptance rates that schools advertise tend to be BS.
