Program to Help Disadvantaged Teens

UVa just established a program to create college advisers for disadvantaged teens throughout VA to specifically help them w/ college applications and financial aid.

Good luck with the new financial aid system. I had to stratch UVA off my list because my family was expected to pay $30K while paying around $22-20 at equal/better schools.

Did UVa expect that from you after applying this year or is that from last year? If from this year, I'm surprised that now in early Dec. you're able to compare financial aid packages. Schools usually don't offer such comparable info until the Spring.

Access UVA was only established this year, and the grants instead of loans for poor students as well as the loan caps for all others weren't offered last year.

UVa just improved its Financial Aid Program (called Access UVA). Now more low-income kids are eligible for a completely debt-free education at The University of Virginia. Here's an article about the improvements:

U.VA. TO OFFER MORE FINANCIAL AID
*****By Sandra Yin of the Hampton Roads Daily Press
More students will be eligible for a debt-free education at the University of Virginia, according to a Monday announcement by President John T. Casteen III. ... "Our intention is as simple as this," said Casteen. "Students ought not be denied access to higher education because of the cost."

Is it possible that a family that qualifies for no need-based financial aid, can attend UVA and graduate with a maximum debt of $16,000??? It seems too good to be true!

I know this is an old thread, but it really does seem to good to be true. My family has an EFC over the amount for out-of-state tuition, yet my parents say that we cannot even pay a fourth of our EFC. It doesn't seem like the whole ending up with 16,000 in loans would apply to my family, but I hope it does.
