I was admitted to the SEAS at UVa for the fall 08 session...and i will accept the offer as soon as the package arrives here...however, i was just wondering how good is the SEAS at UVa?
I know UVa is a respected school and all but according to USNEWS, it doesn't rank that high in Engineering. I will be majoring in ECE...how good are job placements and salaries and all..i know rankings aren't everything and UVa is amazing overall and the atmosphere at the university is excellent..but i was just wondering...any input appreciated! My son had no problem getting an internship for this summer. Three interviews, 3 good possibilities. Interviewed for the position he accepted along with people from Duke,Cornell, and CMU.

You should be more concerned with a school's overall reputation and job placement than its rankings in specific fields. Recruiting out of UVA is excellent and engineers even from so-so programs (ie, much lower than Virginia SEAS) get great jobs. You do the math. And at UVA, you might decide that you don't want to pursue a straight-up engineering job. Guess what? Engineers here have the opportunity to pursue the full range of business careers.

Business classes should be required for all engineers. You ought to look closely at the engineering business minor. That has got to help your marketability and is invaluable when you start your own business.

Lots of engineering students end up going into investment banking.

Rankings for e-schools is tough. UVa's program is very, very solid, but it's on the smaller side of top programs, which brings it down a tad. But, it's still top 30. And UVa is top 25 overall. Overall, it can't be that bad
As far as job placement goes, I had an internship last summer and will this summer without a problem for either. And job placement after graduation is very high, largely due to the fact that SEAS hosts two career fairs (fall/spring) and the career center is very, very helpful. Top eng. companies like Lockhead Martin, GE, IBM, etc all recruit here, as well as smaller firms looking for fresh people. Other top companies outside engineering (investment banking, management, etc) also recruit the College/McIntire, so there's plenty of opportunities outside engineering as well.

In UG engineering education, they usually teach you the very basic knowledge and skills to get you ready for entry level engineering jobs or for more in-depth research activity later (if you go to graduate school). So when you graduate with your BS degree in ECE, you won't be a specialist but an ECE generalist rather. And you will have no problem finding an entry level job anywhere you like, but usually big companies tend to recruit nationwide vs. small to medium companies focus rather locally.
UVa engineering, esp. ECE will be a great educational experience for you, I believe, and furthermore, UVa as a whole will give you memorable 4 years in your life.

I live in MA and I was wondering how well UVA is at finding internships in places not in the local area. I want to be able to spend my summers near home rather than in the DC area.
