UVA concerns/questions

Hey guys... few questions

1) If I get accepted into uva I may major in economics, and if theyll let me - double major in econ/math. I was just wondering how good this econ program is...?

2) Also, it seems that a LOT of students major in this at uva. Would the extreme number of econ majors cause serious competeition for business jobs (ie - finance). I kinda regret not applying to c-school now, but its too late. Econonmics and math are enjoyable for me as well.

3) Ive read on UVA's website that they do not allow any extra semesters to finish up your degree. This is different than other schools I have applied to. Most schools put a limit of 5-6 years to complete a degree, where UVA doesnt want you to take more than 4 years to complete it. HAs anyone been confronted by this situation? I just want to know if theyll literally kick you out if you arent done in 4 years becuase I dont know if I will be.

I'll let the students tell you what they think of the econ dept. It's hard for me to say anything but good things about it.

FYI, you apply to the Comm school in your second year. No first-year applies directly to Comm, so it's not too late!

Unless you make a drastic change in major late in your college career, you should graduate on time. You will be expected to remain fully enrolled during all semesters, so you shouldn't need extra semesters unless you apply for a fifth year program or have a special case that warrants an exception to be made.

Oops! I assumed everyone knew I applied to UVA as a transfer student (incoming 3rd year). So that would make my situation a bit different than an incoming freshman. Sorry for the confusion, Dean J. But thanks for the help!

I'm sure the econ program is great - I just like reassurance I guess. As a transfer, can I still apply to C-school if I am accepted into the college of arts & sciences as a third-year? Does UVA allow 3rd year students to apply to C-school? I would be stoked if so!

The "4 semester rule" just seems to be all over the UVA website...I have written down potential semesters for my math/econ double major. It seems as tho I can do it within 4 semesters with hard work - I was just wondering.

I would really like to hear what you think about my "newly developed" situation, Dean J.

Since you are a transfer I think you could apply to the Commerce School now. But they do have prereqs that you should complete.

ENG 112, 241/242, 243/244, 251/252; ART 101/102; PHI 101/102 are recommended. Other courses in the Humanities, English, Art, Music, and Speech and Drama may also be accepted. SPD 100 or SPD 110 is strongly recommended

Foreign Language - 0-14 semester hours.
All students must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language equivalent to the intermediate level of college instruction. This proficiency can be demonstrated by college course work or by an SAT II Subject Test score (refer to the admission catalog). Completion of level 202 in a foreign language satisfies this requirement.

General Electives:
Your elective courses plus the above requirements will need to total 54 semester hours (60 semester hours is recommended). Suggested electives: PSY 201/202; SOC 201/202; PLS 211/212; BIO 101/102; CHM 101/102; PHY 201/202.

Particular attention will be paid to performance in Accounting, Economics, and Mathematics. In certain cases attendance at the University's Summer Session may be required. Students are strongly encouraged to complete a public speaking course and computer-programming course.

I'm not sure if transfer refers to transferring as a 2nd yr or 3rd; requirements may vary. I would send them an e-mail and ask for verification. But good luck!!
