What's there to do in the summer?

Hey y'all,

I might be coming to UVa in the summer and I'm wondering if the Grounds will be completely deserted or whether there will still be people around.

What kind of things are there to do on Grounds and in C-ville to pass the time and meet new people during the summer?

U.Va. Summer Session

Summer orientation is also during the (surprise) summer. This information came in the packet they sent me but I know some are still waiting for it so I'll post the information regarding orientation here.

Orientation. Your chance to learn about the University, ask questions, sign up for classes, get to know people, and begin your adventure as a new student! Summer Orientation sessions for 1st yr students last for two days. A program for parents and guests run concurrently with the program for new students. Additional orientation programming will take place in the fall after you arrive on Move In Day. You will want to sign up for the Summer Orientation that corresponds to the school you will be entering this fall. If you are an international students or an American student living abroad, you should come to Session L, which is Prior to Move In Day.

Session A: June 23-24 : CLAS, SEAS, SEAS Bridge
Session B: June 26-27: CLAS, SRAC, Transfer SRAC, Echols Scholars
Session C: June 30-July 1: CLAS, SEAS
Session D: July 7-8: CLAs, Nursing, Rainey Academy Program, Casteen Scholars
Session E: July 10-11: CLAS, SEAS, SEAS Rodman
Session F: July 14-15: CLAS, Echols
Session G & H: July 17 & 18: Transfer Students Only
Session J: July 21-22: CLAS, SEAS, Echols
Session K: July 24-25: CLAS, SEAS
Session L: August 20-22: International Students Session

I took a couple classes last summer and Grounds were pretty much deserted. I actually looked forward to the orientation sessions and the kiddie camps.

Food is horrible as Dining caters to the orientation crowd and the kiddie camps. The main course is pretty much pizza every night. Last summer I made the mistake of buying a meal plan as I didn't have a car. Definitely not worth it, go to the Corner or Barracks instead.

The school tries to have some activities going on. I did spend a lot of time at the A&F center and there are some organized trips on weekends for kayaking and hiking which is pretty nice. I also took advanced tennis lessons through the A&F center as well. Not a whole lot of fellow students on grounds though.

An internship or job.

Well, Grounds are pretty deserted during the summer, your best bet is to make it to something the school is putting on, or contacting someone you know is also staying in C'ville and going from there. They probably have a group of friends also staying, and those friends know other people, etcetc.

woah just realized. vicente, are you talking about a few days or the whole summer? the difference in the type of answer you would get for each is quite vast.

hey, I'm doing an internship with a prof. Maybe i should bring a car so that I can spend my weekends in DC or the mountains?

are there any clubs that still run during the summer?

I have a friend working an internship down here, and I might be down here too for sessionI, but our plans mostly consist of work/school, eating, sleeping, doing random stuff (video games, pool, etc), working out, and seeing the few people we know/meet down here for the summer. For weekends, it's mostly sleeping in, exercising, pool, and maybe hiking occasionally.
Having a car would be beneficial, as you can drive to the Downtown Mall and see a concert/movie/go shopping, you can drive to go hike, you can feed yourself outside your apt, etc. I doubt you'd wanna drive to DC more than a few times the whole summer, because believe me, it's a long drive. Maybe you could go visit friends at JMU/VCU/VT if you know any. You could drive to VaBeach, too. Better than DC =P

well, bars in the summer are really fun and chill. but then you'd have to be 21. or have a good fake...

But that's where I hung out at nights the two summers I spent in cville.

Charlottesville, IMO, is wonderful when students are here, but even better when things quiet down a little bit. The concert calendar gets better, lines are shorter, and traffic moves a little more quickly.

There is a Friday's After Five free concert every Friday night as well as a variety of concerts in the ampitheatre in the Downtown Mall.
