Asian Girls & UVA (Extremely random questions)

hey all,

As a asian (chinese) male from NYC possibly going down to UVA for college, a peculiar question suddenly popped into my mind...

i was wondering if there is a good amount of asian (chinese, korean, thai, viet) girls at UVA. i know that UVA is souther and primarily white but i was wondering what population of the UVA girls are chinese, korean etc. According to the UVA site, 11% of the total population is asian, however this can include indians, etc. Anyways yeah... extremely random question, but very curious

thanks in advance!

What proportion of the people of "Asian" race are American? I.e. when you see an "Asian" with another "Asian", how likely are they that they are speaking English?

Umph, I'd say you've got a 50/50 chance they're speaking English. Then you have those like me who switch between English and Mandarin.

14% of UVa is asian/asian pacific american and there are a lot of organizations that have to do with the asian community. I posted a more complete list in another thread but I took out the organizations that obviously are not Chinese related; there may be some left that have another ethnic focus but I didn't look up each and every one. That's your job.

these include:

Cultural & Political Organizations
Asian Student Union
Chinese Student Association
Chinese Student & Scholars Society
Dream Corps International
Mainland Student Network
Minority Rights Coalition

Greek Letter Organizations
alpha Kappa Delta Phi
Lambda Phi Epsilon
Sigma Psi Zeta

Spiritual / Religious Organizations
Chinese Christian Fellowship
Grace Christian Fellowship

Fine Arts & Literary Organizations
Inkstone

Lisieux, they speak English but many people who are fluent in another language also speak in the other language. So, some Chinese choose to speak Mandarin to others who speak Mandarain.

And I know this is going to sound so sketch, but you could look at the group members of Chinese UVa Organizations on Facebook.

edit: hahaha I was wondering why someone would ask this question and then I saw

Yes indeed. There's some fierce rivalry between CSA and Mainland Student Network.

LOL not necessarily. Some international students come to UVA with horrendous english language skills (at least spoken english). It's not as hard as you think (or uncommon) to have friends or relatives with strong (or even native) english skills to write essays or recommendations for foreign applicants, or even take the TOEFL for them. That's not to say that this type of thing is prevalent...most international students are very talented english speakers and have a surprising level of American cultural fluency.

take the tests for them??? lol omg that's just desperate... haha i don't know, are there a lot of people like that? I'm Asian and have lived in Asia all my life. English is not really my mother tongue but since I went to an English-speaking school 4 years ago I am even more eloquent in English than my original language haha.
