| Here's an interesting article about college waitlists.
UVA is overbooked. |

| I'm just coming back to lurk, since my D has decided on a school other than UVA. But the thing that I find so compelling about the UVA board (other than the fact that I happen to like the university) is that you have an Admissions Dean as an active participant on the board, giving you accurate info whether the news is encouraging or not. As far as I know, Dean J is the only regular contributor to a CC forum from an Admissions office. It seems to me a very human and humane way to interact with prospective applicants and students, and I think it must enhance the image of the UVA administration in the eyes of the current and future students who post here. |

| And you forget that she's also a great tool for current students She helped me pick a place for my birthday dinner (Downtown Grill) and it was fantastic! She's helped numerous others with stuff to do, places to eat, places to stay, academic questions, etc. |

| How often does overenrollment happen? Is it due to dropping ED? |

| Another student asked similar questions in the comments section of my blog. I'll repeat what I wrote there and add a little more...
This situation hasn't come up during my time at UVa, but I have seen it occur at other schools. The reasons for this happening can vary dramatically, from a great performance in the NCAA tournament (clearly not our situation this year ) to rumors of a celebrity joining the freshman class. |

| ....basketball isn't the only sport. UVA actually did incredibly well last season in football and just as well in the first round of the NFL being one of the only schools with 2 first round draft picks
p.s the mens lacrosse team is ranked 2 in the nation and plays in the quarterfinals this week.....
plus maybe the 30 extra students enrolled because they are guaranteed to see USC play at Scott Stadium which is much easier to get into than the Coliseum in southern California |

Tufts also has a real admissions rep responding to posts. But, like you, I lurk on this board just to learn about admissions from DeanJ. |

| The timing of the NCAA tournament lends itself to factoring into the college decision process. |

| George Mason saw a significant increase in enrollment when their Men's Basketball team became something of a media darling during the Patriots' improbable run into the Final Four of the 2006 NCAA tournament.
It should be noted that Jim Larranaga, their Head Basketball Coach, was one of Terry Holland's Assistant Coaches at UVa, along with Craig Littlepaige, UVa's current Athletic Director. Now those were glory days for Virginia Basketball. |

| I wouldn't be at all surprised if that turns out to be the case. The school garnered a boat load of positive publicity with their basketball team's NCAA performance this spring. |

| I live in Kansas and my sister goes to KU (won national championship in basketball) and is writing a paper on application spikes after winning the title. I think I actually read an article that it goes up 6-8% for the winning school. I would never think it would have that big of an influence. |
