transfer admission, please give input!

Hello CC, this is my first post and I hope someone with knowledge of the UVa transfer process can help me sort my thoughts here about what the chances are of my transfer offer of admission being rescinded.

I am a rising 2nd year at Virginia Tech in the honors engineering program, but decided after my first semester to apply to UVa after becoming disillusioned with the field of engineering. I have been offered admission by the College of Arts & Sciences and have sent my signature accepting the offer. The problem rests with the results of my most recent semester where I took courses that were, for me, quite difficult, and led to less than exemplary results.

I validated 32 credits from AP scores at Tech (took all AP classes senior year, total 9, avg 4) and my SATs are 2270 (800m/690v/780w) with sat II's (800 math II, 800 chemistry) and so I was thrown into only technical courses for my 2nd semester, pertaining to my to-be engineering major that I already disliked. My high school GPA was 3.78 and my first semester at Tech (17 credits) was a 3.74. The other areas of my application were strong, with varsity athletics, many other eca's and good essays. This, of course, is not the problem.

Spring 2008 semester:
2nd semester intro engineering: B+
2nd semester physics: B- (difficult for me, but trudged through)
2nd semester physics lab: (no separate grade from above)
differential equations: C- (unexpected poor final exam--concern #1)
honors multi variable calculus: Withdraw (concern #2)

The withdraw was a mix of many things that I found were unbecoming of me, including a poor start due to not focusing enough on keeping myself motivated, or incompatibility with the professors abstract teaching method perhaps? This is all retrospective analysis of course, and I won't make excuses for my performance, but I thought I should give some sort of explanation since I am typically a respectable math student.

Essentially I took only 12 credits in my second semester due to their grueling nature and my inability to sign up for additional classes in my major because of prereqs (and because I was done with area requirements). However, I withdrew from one class and then got a C in another--the combined results of two exams taken unprepared. This brings my 1st year GPA down to a 3.29. This is something I plan to never repeat.

Can anyone provide insight as to whether or not I should be worried? I apologize for my long-winded post but please understand how much I feel as though my future is teetering on the sharpest of mountain peaks ready to crumble at the breeze of one summer's envelope of judgement. lol. (decided to stop being so serious). Anyway, please help if you can!

I got in with a 3.2 so I doubt you should have concern. Maybe write them a letter explaining that you realize your performance faltered, but you feel strongly about restarting at UVA with a new major you'd be more interested in. But, I don't think you're going to hear from UVA, IMO. A 3.29 is still very respectable.

Thanks for your timely response shoebox, I've been reading around and have seen your posts elsewhere and since I know you went through a similar process that is reassuring. If anyone else has anything to add, I'll take all the opinions I can get. I'd like to think that I'll be fine and hopefully this can serve as my first lesson in academic responsibility or something to that effect. If all goes well that will just be it and then I'll be able to start over as you've said, but I'll be sure to start on a letter just in case.

hey vt,

Im almost in the exact same situation as you. I had a lot going on this emester with family, which resulted in a wihdrawal and a C. Fortunately, my withdrawal was before the refund date so it didnt show up on my transcript. I think itll show the foresight that you had not to finish the course. I dont think theyll love it, but they wont rescind you for it (imo).

I also have a C and at first i was REALLY nervous about it, but i truly do not see them rescinding anyones admission for 1 C in your final semester - its too risky and expensive.

Anyway...you took rigorous coursework and came out OK - i think youll be perfectly fine. Good luck us! You should join the UVA transfer Facebook group and meet some ppl:Login | Facebook

reverberating,
shoebox10,

With your GPA's did you get accepted immediately as a transfer student or did you get off the waitlist?

immediately. I sent in mid-semester report though during 2nd semester and had a 3.8 then, but it was unofficial so I don't even know if they took it into account.
