Irc

Has anyone here lived at the IRC during their second yr? Out of the 4 IRC houses (Munford, Gwathmey, Lewis, Hoxyon), which one would be the best place for a second yr to live in?

i don't think you get to choose which one of the houses you live in.

Lewis and Hoxton are suite-style I think (I've only been in those buildings a few times: I can't differentiate between the two). They have a more luxurious setup than Gwathmey at least.

IIRC, Munford is basically the female version of Gwathmey. They do get a nicer lobby complete with patio -- but Munford is basically the central building of the IRC, and the first floor is basically all common rooms. Munford is connected on the first floor by a breezeway to Gwathmey, and the Gwathmey people come over all the time for events and to cut through Munford to get to Emmet. I think Munford is newer than Gwathmey. Gwathmey is old, and it shows. The interior isn't exactly sketchy-looking, but basically the layout is quite spartan --- though you still get the lounges, floor kitchens, etc. But floormates/hallmates are very nice.

If you care more about community and culture (including a fairly sizeable French-speaking and Arabic-speaking population) than only having whitewashed walls, you'll still like Gwathmey. If you're a girl, Munford seems pretty good. You also might not get the problem of having your shower water suddenly turn really hot because someone flushes a toilet in your common hall bathroom (or even on other floors).

Since basically most of the common facilities are located in Munford, it's also easier to get to the computer lab, Klazroom (the big room with the large-screen TV), Fishbowl (a comfy discussion room), the free food events, etc. if you live there. Gwathmey is the next closest. The upperclassmen residents in Hoxton and Lewis need to walk a bit more. But since a lot of the value of the IRC is in the common facilities (and the community that lives there), a lot of your experience won't depend based on what building you live in. The Hoxton and Lewis people frequently spend a lot of time in Munford (and Gwathmey) anyway, to make up for the traditional downsides of the suite-style arrangement.
