Hereford

So, I got placed in Hereford - it looks like the farthest dorm away from my engineering Thornton. Any tips?

I'm trying to not let all the negative things I've heard about Hereford ruin my first year of college..

It's not that far from the e-school, just cut through the stadium lot.

I would advise that you figure out the bus schedule, and take advantage of that

^ Yea I heard that from someone else too.

Hey hazel, how long would it take walking? And how far is the shortcut? I think I'll try to find the stadium way when I get there. BTW - I really wanted to live in Brown but was not selected , would have loved to get to know you, you seem pretty cool

PS I'm living in malone if anyone can comment on that

it can't be more than 10-15 minutes through the stadium. assuming you're walking at a decent pace. brown to gilmer is only 5 minutes and i'd estimate it's half the distance of hereford to eschool.

if you ever want to get to know any brownies, come chill in the newcomb brown room. we eat our meals there and anyone can sit there. just start up a conversation. a lot of future brownies start out eating there and getting to know people. you also may have just had the wrong idea about how to go about doing the brown app (it's a more laid back app, not a serious one like uva - we love creativity and occasional, tasteful humour).

Hereford is also pretty good for stargazing ... nice hills! I think it's the highest-elevated portion of Grounds (excluding random observatory towers in the mountains...) I remember one time it was raining everywhere else on Grounds but it was snowing out on the Hereford hills (mountains?) lol, probably because the pressure is 50 mbar lower up there.

Hereford has Northline, U-Loop and the Trolley running towards Central Grounds -- 3 routes to the science area in the morning!

Try IRC. The nearest bus stop that goes towards Central Grounds (since Green goes to JPA and the Hospital...) is stop 16358. In order to make it for the bus WALKING, you have to leave while the online busfinder says it's 10 minutes away. That's because the straight diagonal route isn't possible because of the sheer cliff between IRC and the Ivy/Emmet corner (nice view though), and there's a big 4-lane road (Emmet St N) between the IRC and the bus stop and sometimes you'd have to wait to cross the road twice. I remember I would frequently leave Gwathmey while the bus was 5 minutes away and I'd have to sprint, cut through Munford doors (using swipe card) and violate all sorts of traffic rules and then hope Northline would be trapped behind the Emmet/Ivy red light. And then of course after 16358, NL takes a nice 5-minute break at Alderman Library.

It was really annoying whenever you suddenly decided on eating at O'Hill at 7:30 pm. The 15-minute walk was usually faster.

Really?! I didn't know that, I thought it was reserved.

Yea hazel, I tried to make it seem like I was interested but I guess it was a wrong kind of humor idk.. I was introduced to Brown by my cousin who lives in Brown and will be entering her 2nd year in Brown. I really liked the close community too. And was disappointed because I heard its a lot easier getting in as a first year, and if I can't even do that.. what are my changes next year.

Thanks for the shortcut information though, i'm sure I'll be using that everyday if I don't take the bus

I'm not sure which is my room number and what the other numbers mean - I think its the number of Malone's address. Can someone shed some light on that?

Hereford isn't that far from e-school, but it is pretty far from everything else. With new and old dorms, you have the option of going back to your room between classes, with Hereford, it's far enough that you leave for the day, and come back to go to bed.

Personally, I'd try hard to get switched to new/old dorms.

The number is your room number/address at school. So if your number is 150 Malone, your address at school is 150 Malone Hall, Charlottesville, VA 22904. Even though that's your address, you need to get mail and packages at Tuttle.

Yea, if it's easy to switch, I'd go for it for sure, but I've heard its hard and read its hard on here.

Well that's the thing, there are two numbers on there. My assignment says
3## Malone House 3##-A1
HEREFORD COMPLEX

Is the first number my room, or is it the seond number? and what does A1 mean?

The 3## is your room number, the A1/A2 just means roommate 1 or roommate 2. You don't need to include the A1 on any mailings.

^ Would it be the first number or the second number? The 3## in front and 3## after are different numbers
