Renting a MicroFridge

I was thinking of renting a MicroFridge first year. I heard that there is no need for a fridge after first year because upperclass dorms and apartments already have kitchens. My roommate and I don't have any use for a fridge at home afterwards, so the fridge will just go to waste, and decent size fridges are pretty expensive. Is renting a good idea? Thanks

ooh and another question...or two..What is the best size for a fridge/microfridge if I were to buy one, and where can I get one that is hardy and inexpensive?

your first question is answered in our sticky thread,
size: go for the size offered by the renting companies
where: craigslist?

Which sticky thread? Craigslist isn't really that great...couldn't find one decently priced. Any other suggestions?

We only have one sticky thread. It's the one at the top of the UVA forum that starts IMPORTANT: ... You can find info on fridges by searching for "fridge" - ctrl+f in internet explorer and firefox or Edit-find in internet explorer
Craigslist has better deals right before and after school lets out. You can find a huge amount of dorm things that people just don't want to take home or wait to sell to incoming 1st yrs when moving from their summer sublets back to their new dorm/apt.
Hope that helps

We got a 3.8 cuft refrigerator and a small micro for less than $100 on sale just before school started for my son. After the fisrt year, he moved off campus and still uses the refrigerator in his room as the common refrigerator is just not big enough for everyone in the apartment.

Look for back to school sale late summer. The cost of buying is about the same as renting a micro/refrig for a year. If you don't want to keep it, sell it.

I had a suitemate who rented a microfrige from UVA and absolutely hated it. She would always use my microwave (which I got for like $30 from walmart) to make popcorn because the microwave on her unit was so weak that it would take literally 5+ minutes to pop. The fridge also smelled really bad. I helped her scrub it out with baking soda and it didn't do any good. Her advice would be to not rent one and just buy it, so I'll pass that along to you

Thanks for the help everyone. If you know anyone who will be selling a good quality fridge with freezer, please let me know. Otherwise I'll just visit craigslist a lot for the next few weeks

For the record. UVA never rented microfridges. That was an outside company that handled that.
Now the Bookstore does offer Microwaves and fridges that are approved by UVA housing for purchase (not rent!) that are delivered to your room and ready for you on move-in day.

The bookstore bundle isn't a bad deal, and especially for OOS students, it's nice not to have the hassle of buying a fridge and having to haul it to your room. It's what I did last year, but if you feel the need to save a couple bucks, go to Wal-mart, if your time is worth something, just get it delivered by the bookstore. They were really good about delivery too, when I arrived, the microwave didn't work, and they had a new one brought to me within a half hour.

Again, note that WDStrongJr is a rep from the bookstore.

If you live far away from Virginia (e.g. you flew), rent a car on Move-in day, for like 25 dollars.

If you were tight on luggage space, then do all your shopping in-town.

You could also arrange something from craigslist. And people from there might be willing to deliver it to you. I think Best Buy delivers.

or, you could just have it waiting in the dorm when you get there, we have access to all the dorm room before you arrive, no other place has that.
These are new machines, with manufacturer warranties.

Plus spending money with the UVA Bookstore goes back to the University.

i personally rented a microfridge this year and i was really pleased with it. more than half of my hall didn't have freezers so they would always cram their frozen foods into mine. the first microfridge they gave me came with a really crappy microwave, but all i needed to do was email them explaining that the microwave wasn't functioning well and the guy came the next day and replaced it for me, free of charge. after that i had no problems with the microfridge at all. i'm also an OOS student so it was a lot easier for me to rent one than to buy one.
