Music Program at UVa?

Hi all,

Does UVa have a good music program, jazz in particular? I have played in the jazz band throughout high school and have toured internationally. I'm not planning on a music major, but I would like a good jazz band or combo to play in.

Any UVa musicians out there have input? Can you play in the school program without being a music major?

I don't know about the jazz band, but I do know that the UVA marching band, which is made up of about 280 people has no more than 5 music majors. So I know you can for sure be in marching band without being a music major

To the best of my knowledge, UVA is a non-audition admit based program, but ensemble participation appears to audition based.

For Applicants — McIntire Department of Music, U.Va.
Jazz Chamber Ensembles — McIntire Department of Music, U.Va.
Jazz Ensemble — McIntire Department of Music, U.Va.

A mention from CC music major forum, but consider also the requirements for a performance track/undergrad music pursuit for career in music typically vary substantially from those that are just interested in a participatory experience, so weigh the comments accordingly.

Unable to give up music...

"Toured internationally" can have a few definitions, from a school/youth orchestra sponsored student paid trip to paid professional contract touring schedules. Depending on your level of skills, training and musical talent and how you fit, UVA may or may not provide what you want.

It's typically best to read through any institution's music department/school of music webpages to determine the breath, depth and requirements/restrictions for ensemble participation. The satisfaction factor can be a function of the peer level, and the "fit" for a conservatory level serious player can often be a far higher standard than an "average" talent just wishing to play at the college level.
