****What is The Atmosphere of UVA like****

I'm being recruited by UVA for an athletic scholarship and I'm taking an official this weekend. So far i've visited University of Michigan which has also made me an offer and Im headed to UPenn on sunday. I'm curious about the atmosphere of UVA. Im a good student not the type of student that would get in under normal circumstances, but because im a blue chip athlete im getting in.

Is the school's vibe closer to a big ten University of Michigan feel or to an ivy league school. Also being in Virginia is the school have a southern feel or is it more east coast. Also what are the people and professors like and is there a strong athletic fanbase at the school. If you could, compare UVA to Umich, Penn, and UCLA because these are all schools I'm taking offical recruiting visits too, and these are schools that have offered me scholarships. Thanks a ton.

"I'm taking an official this weekend."
God knows UVA has enough of those so don't bother to bring him or her back.

I'm not really sure why you think that a community which has worked very hard academically for a chance to get into UVA would encourage you to take their spot just because you can play a sport.

Can you tell me more about what sport you're being recruited to play for and where you're from? It will help me better gauge where you're coming from.

I'd say UVA is a blend of an Ivy League like atmosphere (kids dressing up for their classes, polos, backwards hats, etc.) and sports atmosphere. UVA a couple of years back was quite decent at football( when they were accepting less academically stellar athletes) and that still plays a part in the environment and community in Charlottesville.

Supposedly Penn does not give athletic scholies. Makes the post a little questionable.

UVA only feels stuck up at night, and then only on Rugby Road, the Lawn or while riding the bus routes between the Chapel and O'Hill (read: 5-10 minutes.).

(Also, the first years are mainly responsible for this vibe.)

As someone asked earlier, what sport are you being recruited for?

In response to WuTangForeva- I have no idea what "UVA only feels stuck up at night" is supposed to mean. That's a really vague statement. Are you saying you think UVA seems stuck up when you go to frat parties or something? It would be nice if you could clarify your statements so you don't confuse people who are looking for answers on this board.

I have not seen or encountered anyone with a stuck up attitude. People here are generally down to earth.

I see the "stuck up" attitude here and there, but I wouldn't say it is the student norm. They have their niche, much like may other students will find.

Basically you never feel self-conscious about your social status on Grounds ... until you go to a party or the Corner on Friday or Saturday night.

I may be very wrong on this, but I thought that Ivy's (in reference to Penn) don't give out any scholarships, meaning either athletic or academic.
Please educate me otherwise; Lord knows, I've been wrong many times before.
Thanks

It's for Track and Field. But I took a visit this past weekend and it was great. I got a good feel of the university and it seemed like a more formal version of Michigan or UC Berkeley but not as uptight as an IVY League. The people were all great and it seems the professors were extremely helpful and knowledgeable of their subject. Another plus was the beautiful campus.

Penn however I didn't really enjoy as much. Some kids on the team and at the school were stuck up, which i found surprising given Penn's reputation as the more 'down to earth' school of the ivies.
