Quick Question about Books for classes

Hi everyone, i was just wondering: When are book lists made available for fall classes, and where do you go when they are available? On BlackBoard? Thanks for all the help.

Another quick question: How many of you buy your books off of Amazon to save money? This is what i planned on doing, but didn't know if the book lists were going to come out the day classes start or a month before they start. Would you recommend buying books off the internet?

Thanks for all the help, peace

It came out about two weeks before classes started last year. Online is a great way to buy your textbooks and save, just be sure to use the ISBN numbers to get the right edition. Here is a thread from last year with lots of info: Booklist is Out!

I would use this site to find books:

BookFinder.com: Search for New & Used Books, Textbooks, Out-of-Print and Rare Books

It searches all the major book sites for the best price (amazon, half, etc...).

Would people recommend going to class the first day before buying books?

I don't know if this a rumor or not, but I hear that some classes, you can survive without a book because in those classes, the book is mostly used if you need clarification on the subject? Please do correct me if this is false.

it's true. that happened in my philosophy class. for classes you know you'll be needing the textbook (bio, chem, etc), then buy the book online. for the other classes, i usually wait til the first day of classes.

I made the mistake of buying them before I went to class. So don't do the same and go to class first before buying them. Sometimes you may find out you only need to read a chapter out of a whole book and then you can simply go to the library or photocopy it.

But for science and math classes, I would just buy the books before. You pretty much need them for studying, problem sets, clarification, etc.

Would you recommend emailing the professor before school starts (like now) to ask him/her which books are needed, etc?

And if what War Chant says happens, where you don't need the whole book, are all textbooks/books that the classes use available in the USC libraries to check out? Or in the reference section or something?

I have before, or you can email and ask for the syllabus which should have the calendar of the class.

I don't know if all of them are, but there were two that I needed and they had them. You can look them up online.
