I took offense at the stupid VT/UVA joke. I have a daughter who went to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology choose to go to VT because of the awesome scholarship opportunities they gave her. TJ students are a dime a dozen at UVA and don't get the money that VT handed out to her. How many UVA students can say that most of their college is paid for? I also know of a neighbor who DID NOT get in to the exclusive Architecture program at Tech who ended up at UVA. It DOES happen and there are quality students at Tech as well as at UVA.
I now have a daughter heading to UVA. They are both good schools and everyone has to decide what is best for them, their personality, and their pocketbook. I am sure that VT LOVES to make fun of UVA during football season but I doubt very much that Hokies will do that this year to ANYONE they play in football. They were all touched by the support UVA and ALL schools showed after the tragedy. I hear their plan is to not only cheer for the Hokies but the opposing team at every game to show how much they appreciated the support. By the way....the Dave Matthews Band will be playing at Tech in September for all of the VT students and past year's Grads in a show of support.

I remember seeing the "Hoos for Hokies" sign last year and I HOPE the good sportmanship and camraderie remains for some time to come.

Oh yea? Tech isn't going to give her the opportunity to interview with bulge bracket investment banking firms, white-shoe consultancies, trading firms, and other highly-selective employers. Tech also won't offer the same degree of high-end thinkers and doers that UVA would. But I guess she probably knows enough winners from HS that she'll do alright.

A college education isn't a commodity like milk or eggs. There's a value to attending a well-endowed, competitive school. Does that mean you should spend $200k to go to Duke over UVA? Maybe not. But UVA for $60k over Tech for free? Maybe.

Whatever, anyone who's considering Tech for architecture didn't get into Yale, Rice, Cooper Union, or another powerhouse.

Tech has a relatively mediocre athletics program. UVA's is in the top 10 in the Director's Cup.

The comraderie that exists between the two schools is fine. As far as I'm concerned, there is no rivalry. A rivalry can really only exist between peer schools, and UVA and VT are different schools that serve different purposes.

How about adding the Jefferson Scholarship Foundation? It's gotta be one of the best scholarship programs anywhere in the country!

Not true. UVA was actually 13th in Director's Cup last year, not top 10.
