Why UVa?

It's funny to have the first thread in this section. So, I'll start by asking, "Why do you (potentially of the Class of 2012) want to go to UVa? What drew you to Mr. Jefferson's University?

my parents made me visit on the way home from a summer vaca in OBX. Initially i dreaded goin b/c it meant a few extra hours in the car and also at that point (summer after sophomore year) I didnt care nor know much about UVA or any other college at that point. Well, needless to say, I visited and fell in love with it at first sight. It was the realization of my fantasy college and I've been obsessed every since.

I was in Richmond visiting family, and they suggested we make a day trip out to Charlottesville. I decided that UVa is the college for me on first sight. Beautiful campus, top notch academically, and close to everything you could possibly want to do.

Few things:

-staying in the south while getting away Texas
-engineering and business - what better place for that than UVA?
-D1 sports (and decent/good teams)
-good social life

Those were my requirements. Greek life, the campus (hopefully soon I can and will have to say "grounds"), the prestige, and my visit to see my brother there was awesome.

When I first started my college search my main focus was on the price. I looked at out of state schools and of course the tuition is ridiculous. I was discouraged at first because I assumed my choices were limited but after research I quickly discovered all of the oppurtunities in the ol' dominion. I knew I wanted a big school that would have a wide variety of majors and classes, D1 sports because I LOVE competition, and somewhere I could see myself living. UVA is right on the money. And what has really gotten me hooked is the tradition and prestige of attending THE University of Virginia. There is so much history and intrigue in the secret societies, the rotunda, the dorms on the lawn...and this may sound cliche but it seriously feels amazing walking where many great students, professors, and TJ himself have set foot. Honestly now, even if I had the money to go to school out of state, I would not want go to school anywhere else but Virginia.

I lived in Charlottesville for 5 years before moving to Richmond. Best place ever. I love UVA because I already know the area and have been to tons of their activities like games and festivities.

The people at UVA are so...nice. When my debate coach told me that she had to get used to people holding doors open for her, I figured she was just saying that because she is obsessed with UVA...but after I visited UVA I realized that she was so incredibly right. Everyone is welcoming, and I think thats what everyone needs in college.

i know that state universities like UVA are typically diverse in a lot of aspects. but if you had to characterize the student body with a few words, what would they be? sophisticated? laid-back? competitive? happy? quirky?
